Title: The passage reveals the relationship between one

1
Back
The passage reveals the relationship between
ones personality and ones name. Names can
greatly affect peoples life. On the one hand,
good names give people more self-confidence,
establish favorable images and promote social
status. On the other hand, names result in
prejudices against people both in their daily
contacts with others and in classroom activities.
So if your name doesnt suit you, you should
change it as soon as possible.
2
Back
The passage contains three parts The first part
introduces the topicimportance of names the
second explains positive and negative effects of
names on life and the third concludes the
necessity of changing names. The passage is a
typical example of exposition developed by
narration. By citing a typical example of a
womans experience concerning her names, the
author directs the readers interest to the
topic. Then based on the analysis of the effects
of names on life in the second part, the author
naturally arrives at his conclusion in the third
part.
3
Back
Based on the narration of several anecdotes
(??)concerning names, the author exemplifies the
positive and negative effects caused by names as
social symbols in daily communication ranging
from making friends to evaluating academic
performance.
Following the logical line, the author finally
brings the article to a conclusion with the
suggestion -- if you dont feel like your name,
you may get a better substitute for it -- thus
corresponding to the situation at the beginning
of the text.
(Paras. 1-3)
By citing the story of a womans experience with
her names, the author naturally introduces the
topic the importance of names in life A good
choice of names surely helps one succeed if only
by adding a bit of self-confidence to ones
talents.

Starting an argumentation with an example is a
very effective and vivid way to introduce the
topic to be discussed in the passage Para. 1
Debbie didnt feel like her original name, for it
didnt suit her good looks and elegant
manner. Para. 2 After she changed her name into
Lynne, she won professional success. Para. 3 The
introduction of the topic Our life has more or
less relation to our names.

Main idea?
Part I
Names really help shape favorable images and
promote interpersonal relationship. However,
names also cause prejudices both in peoples
characters and in class-work evaluation.
Part II (Paras. 4-7)
Devices for developing it?
Exemplification (???)
Part III
Contrast (???)

Back
Exemplification(???)A series of examples are
cited from the authors and others life
experiences to prove As his name is, so is he.
  • Examples Positive effects of names
  • Names are related to specific images. If the
author had a more refined name, his name would
have appeared complete on the magazine.(Para. 4)
  • Names with positive sense encourage new
acquaintances. Many people tend to make friends
    with those having good names.
  • (Para. 5)

Exemplification(???)A series of examples are
cited from the authors and others life
experiences to prove As his name is, so is he.
  • Examples Negative effects of names
  • Most people have prejudiced notions about names.
People often confuse names with some characters.
    (Para. 6)
  • Prejudices against names also affect classroom
achievement. Some teachers are inclined to make
    partial evaluation of their students
    performance. (Para. 7)

??

Back
Making contrast (???) is a typical method of
paragraph development adopted in this passage so
as to clarify the main points. (Para. 7)
Influences of Names
Viewpoint One Apparently, such
prejudices can affect classroom achievement as
well.
Viewpoint Two However, teacher prejudice
isnt the only source of classroom difference.
10
Back
  • Viewpoint One Parts being compared
  • The same papers presented by different names.
  • Essays apparently written by boys named Elmer and
    Hubert.
  • The same papers when the writers names were
    given as Michael and David.

Comparison result Teachers gave consistently
lower grades to papers with names such as Elmer
and Hubert than to those with names like Michael
and David.
11
Back
  • Viewpoint Two first comparison
  • Parts being compared Performance abilities of
    people with different names.
  • Performance abilities of people with names like
Linda, Diane, Barbara, Carol and Cindy.
  • Performance abilities of people with less
    appealing names.

Comparison result People with names like
Linda, Diane, Barbara performed better on
objectively graded IQ and achievement tests than
those with less appealing names.
12
Back
  • Viewpoint Two Second comparison
  • Parts being compared Girlsand boys popularity
in connection with the popularity of their names.
  • Girls popularity with their peers was related to
    the popularity of their names.
  • Boys popularity with their peers was related to
    the popularity of their names.

Comparison result Girls popularity in
relation to the popularity of their names is much
stronger than boys popularity in relation to the
popularity of their names.

Suggestion-advancing (???)

Concluding a passage through making
suggestion as to the problems in question is a
commonly-used method of ending .
In this passage, based on the analysis made
in the previous part, the author naturally comes
to his conclusion by putting forward some
suggestion about the problems many people face
with if you dont feel like your name, change it.
