Title: Training programme for CNG LCV drivers

1
  • Training programme for CNG LCV drivers

2
  • OBJECTIVES OF TRAINING
  • The main objective of the driver training
program is to train the drivers in transport
sector on good driving habits and proper
maintenance practices, primarily to develop a
cadre of skilled drivers. The program should be
meant for drivers to prevent human lives and
national loss. Drivers should be appraised by
    giving individual training for inefficient
driving habits so as to improvise upon them.

3
  • WHAT IS CNG
  • Compressed natural gas has been identified as
one of the alternate fuels to liquid petroleum
fuels, which has added environmental benefits.
This fuel is being used internationally with the
proven success as an automotive fuel.
  • CNG is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases and
vapour consisting of principally methane in
gaseous form which is compressed to a pressure of
200 to 250 kg/cm2 for use as a vehicular fuel.

4
  • UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS
  • This gas is extremely flammable and forms
flammable mixtures with air. It will burn in the
open or be explosive in confined spaces. Its
vapors are lighter than air and will disperse. A
hazard of re-ignition or explosion exists if
flame is extinguished without stopping the gas
    flow.

5
  • EXTINGUISHING MEDIA
  • Stop the flow of gas. Dry chemical, CO2, or
halon. Water can be used to cool the fire but may
    not extinguish the fire.

6
  • SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS
  • Evacuate area upwind of source.
  • Stop gas flow and extinguish fire.
  • If gas source cannot be shut off immediately,
equipment and surfaces exposed to the fire should
be cooled with water to prevent overheating and
    explosions.
  • Control fire until gas supply can be shut off.

7
  • MOBILE CASCADE
  • The cascade is also used for transportation
of CNG in the Mobile cascade. The cascade is
mounted on the LCV chassis with nuts and bolts.
The mounting nuts and bolts should not become
loose during the normal operation. These cascades
are used for transporting CNG from mother station
    to daughter station.

8
  • FITTINGS ON MOBILE CASCADES
  • Safety release valve Each cascade is provided
with SRV for providing the relieving capacity
    under excess pressure.
  • Pressure gauge It indicates the pressure of the
gas stored in the cascade. Pressure increases
with rise in temperature. It should not raise
more than 260 bars. SRV is also set at 260-270
    bar pressure.
  • Valve Valves are provided for each cylinder.
Trough interconnections of various cylinders 3
    tanks are formed.

9
  • A separate valve is provided to operate each
    bank.
  • High pressure piping It is used to interconnect
    the cylinders.
  • Temperature gauge It indicates the pressure of
    the gas inside the cylinder

10
  • SAFETY REQUIREMENTS OF LCV
  • Flame /spark arrestor Each LCV is fitted with a
spark/ flame arrestor of a design approved by
Chief Controller of Explosives It is fitted to
the exhaust pipe of the engine .It prevents fire
sparks and corridors coming out of the exhaust
especially when engine is hot and during long
    halt.
  • Master valve To cut off delivery in case of
    emergency.
  • Master switch This is provided inside the cabin.
This cuts off electric circuit totally and hence
should be used at the time of loading-unloading.

11
  • Fire Extinguisher A 5 kg DCP type fire
extinguisher is provided inside the LCV at a
convenient place to fight fire as soon as it
    starts.
  • First aid kit To be kept always ready with the
recommended items for use in emergency due to
    accidents.
  • Earthing clips Earthing clips has to be firmly
fixed while loading or unloading. Clipping
ensures that its contact comes on bare surface of
metal at both ends. And not on painted surface.

12
  • OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR MOBILE CASCADE LOADING
  • Visually inspection is required of LCV and
cascade for general condition, leakages, presence
of fire extinguisher in LCV, condition of tyres
etc. and inform Shift Officer of any
    shortcomings.
  • Place the LCV in gear. Assure wheel choke has
been placed before connection of hose. Handover
the key of LCV to the LCV filler.
  • Driver should not sit inside vehicle during
    filling, but stay nearby.

13
  • After cascade being filled up to 240kg/cm2
    pressure
  • 1st step
  • Close the valves in filling point and in cascade.
  • 2nd step
  • Vent away the pressurized gas entrapped in
    flexible hose.
  • 3rd step
  • Disconnect hose and earthing clip.
  • 4th step
  • Remove wheel choke
  • Now the LCV can be rolled on from filling point.

14
  • DOS FOR LCV DRIVERS
  • Before starting LCV check oil, water, air, brake,
    horn, light etc.
  • Ensure that all necessary documents as driving
    license, registration papers, insurance papers,
    trem card are with LCV
  • Observe cylinder-cascade for any leakage.
  • Ensure DCP fire Ex. Is available in proper
    condition.

15
  • Check the condition of tyres.
  • Obey the instruction of operators at CNG station.
  • Before starting loading unloading ensure the
use of earthing strips and wheel choke.
  • Take necessary care of LCV.

16
  • DONTs FOR LCV DRIVERS
  • If there is any fault in vehicle dont drive it.
  • Max. speed limit is 40 km.
  • There should not be any loose electrical
connection. Dont use electronic equipment as
    tape-recorder, radio inside the vehicle.
  • Dont sit inside the vehicle at the time of
    loading unloading.
  • Dont leave vehicle alone in any situation.

17
  • Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the
    vehicle.
  • Drinking must be avoided while on-duty.
  • Dont allow any person to drive your vehicle.
  • Dont run the vehicle if there is a gas leakage.
  • Dont do any maintenance work if LCV is loaded.
  • Dont avoid safety instructions

18
  • EMERGENCY SITUATION
  • If there is electrical short circuit in the LCV.
  • If there is any accident of LCV at CNG station or
    on road.
  • Leakage of gas through cylinder-cascade.
  • Fire from cylinder cascade.
  • Vehicle is run and hose in connected position.

19
  • STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN EMERGENCY SITUATION
  • In case of fire-
  • (i) Use dry chemical powder, water spray r CO2.
  • (ii) Keep the container cool by spraying water if
    exposed to fire or heat.
  • Spills
  • (i) Massive leakage of the gas can cause serious
    fire or explosion.
  • (ii) Dont enter gas area without protective
    wears.
  • (iii) Get the area evacuated.
  • (iv) Stop flow of gas if no risk involved.

20
  • Take the LCV in an open safe place. Ensure that
there should not be flames, fire or electricity
    wire.
  • Dont allow any gathering near the vehicle.
  • Try to control the situation with available
    resources.
  • At once inform at CNG Mother station and to the
    supervisor.
  • In case of fire inform to City fire extinguishers
    service and police.

21
  • FIRST AID
  • First aid is the immediate and temporary care
given to a victim of an accident or sudden
    illness.
  • Inhalation Remove the victim to fresh air and
    support respiration.
  • Skin Wash the affected area with plenty of water
    and soap.
  • Eyes Flush with plenty of water.

22
  • Stop any bleeding.
  • Ensure fresh air to victim.
  • Arrange for the removal of the victim to the care
of a doctor or hospital as soon as possible.
