Vocabulary
  • antennae- This is a sensitive feeler that the
    butterfly has
  • caterpillar-The larva of a butterfly.
  • chrysalis- This is a hard shell.  Inside of the
    chrysalis is the butterfly.
  • insects-The body is divided into three sections
    the head, thorax and abdomen. Most have wings.

  • larva-A small insect hatches from an egg is
    called the larva.  The larva of a butterfly is
    called a caterpillar.
  • metamorphosis- a change of form
  • migrate-to change your habitat
  • nectar-A sweet substance secreted by plants. 
  • pupa-Inside the chrysalis the body of the
    butterfly is formed.  This stage is called the
    pupa stage.

Stage 1- The Egg
  • Eggs are first laid on plants by a female
    butterfly. These plants are the food for the
    caterpillars after hatching. the food shortage.

Stage 2- Caterpillar
  • When the egg hatches, a caterpillar emerges. The
    caterpillar eats lots of plants to help it grow.
    During this time, a caterpillar can grow up to
    100 times their size.

Stage 3- Pupae
  • When the caterpillar has stopped eating, it
    attaches itself to a place to sleep. It forms a
    cocoon so we cant see what is happening inside.
    But inside the cocoon the caterpillar is changing
    into a adult.

  • After the butterfly has emerged from the cocoon,
    it is able to fly because of their butterfly
    wings that was changed in the cocoon during its
    sleep.

    Butterfly".
  • Butterflies fly between 5 and 30 miles an hour.
