Transitive Verbs
  • Expresses action toward a noun.
  • The action passes from the doer (subject) to the
    receiver
  • The word that receives the action of a transitive
verb is called a direct object.
  • EXAMPLE The monkey entertained Zach.
  • Thinkentertained what/who?...Zach, so Zach is
    the direct object.

13
Intransitive Verbs
  • Tells something about the subject.
  • There is no one or nothing receiving the action.

EXAMPLE Mr. Doodle crowed. There is nothing
receiving the action crowed, so crowed is
INTRANSITIVE.
Hint If the sentence is intransitive, there is
no direct object.

  • Remember This!!
  • If a sentence is Transitive it has a Direct
Object and maybe an Indirect Object.
  • If a sentence is Intransitive, it does NOT have
    a Direct Object.
