  • If you have any late work or absent work turn it
    in to the basket.
  • If you have your signed course expectations turn
    it into the basket.
  • List some ways you can be safe when using
    equipment in the classroom (pencils, books,
    rulers etc.)
  • Get out a sheet of paper.

    science safety tips I learned.

  • Hands-on experiences are essential to learning in
    science class, but safety must be the first
    concern!
  • The following rules exist for your safety, to
    prevent accidents in the lab and to allow for
    more efficient work to occur.

Science Laboratory
  • When first entering the science room, do not
    touch any equipment, chemicals or other materials
    until you are instructed to do so.
  • NEVER enter the room if unsupervised.

  • Stay focused pay attention to all written and
    verbal instructions.
  • Ask questions before proceeding if you are
    unsure.
  • Know what you are todo before you do it.

  • In fairness to others, clean all glassware, lab
    materials and equipment at the end of each lab.
  • Return all equipment and supplies to the proper
    storage area.

Safety Features
Fire Blanket used to put out a flame on an
individual
Goggles and Eyewash Station Used to protect the
eyes from injuries inflicted by chemicals, sharp
objects, or other hazards
  • Emergency Shower Used to clean large chemical
    spills off of the body

Fire Extinguisher used to put out a flame on an
object or in the classroom

Bellwork Tuesday 9-6-11 On your Bellwork sheet,
Identify as many safety hazards as possible in
the picture below. (Monday - no Bellwork!)
  1. Materials on floor
  2. Smelling not wafting
  3. No safety glasses
  4. Spill not cleaned up
  5. Materials too close to the edge of the lab table
  • Too much clutter
  • Fire danger- papers
  • Heating sealed container
  • Equipment left plugged in

Ways to Keep Yourself Safe in a Science Lab
  • Tie back loose hair
  • No dangly earrings or jewelry
  • Wear goggles and lab aprons
  • Roll up long sleeves
  • Secure baggy clothes
  • Students clean the classroom when the lab is
    over. NOT THE TEACHERS!

NEVER eat or drink in the lab!!!

  • Keep hands away from eyes, mouth and body while
    using chemicals.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water after
    performing lab activities.
  • NEVER touch, taste or smell any chemicals unless
    specified to do so.

  • Never rinse anything down the sink without the
    permission of your teacher.
  • Note the SAFETY Cautions on your lab papers
    before conducting lab activities.

What is a group?
  • A group gets together to perform a task.
  • Every member contributes.
  • NO HITCH-HIKERS!!!
  • You will be asked to rate each member in your
    group when you are done.
  • Hitch-hikers do NOT earn the same score as other
    members!

The Task!!!
  • Work in your group to make a poster about lab
    safety using the tips you were told about today.
  • Draw a picture of someone who is demonstrating
    how to be safe in a science classroom OR draw a
    picture of someone who is not being safe!
  • Make the picture big so the people on the
    other side of the room can see it.

This poster will be shared.
