What is the Flu? The flu, more scientifically
known as influenza, is a highly contagious
respiratory infection caused by influenza
viruses. The influenza virus usually enters the
body through mucus membranes in the mouth, nose
or eyes.  Influenza is an infectious illness
that spreads from person to person, mainly
through coughing or sneezing of infected
people. Influenza is often more serious and
limits our ability to continue with normal
activities.

  • Influenza symptoms include
  • Sudden onset of fever over 38 Celsius
  • Chills
  • Aching muscles and headache
  • Extreme tiredness and a desire to stay in bed
  • Dry cough
  • Runny or stuffy nose, sometimes a sore throat
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea and vomiting (some reported cases)

  • Stay home when you're sick.
  • Avoid close contact with people
  • who are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a
  • tissue When you sneeze. If you don't
  • have a tissue, use your elbow.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose
  • and mouth.

  • Wash your hands frequently using soap and water.
  • Use an alcohol-based disposable hand wipe or
    gel
  • sanitizer if you can't access soap and water.
  • Disposed of use tissues properly
  • immediately after use.
  • Practice other good health habits
  • keep physically active, manage
  • your stress, eat nutritiously, drink
  • plenty of fluids.
  • Seek medical advice immediately.
