Definitions
  • Staffing is the process of ascertaining that
    adequate numbers and an appropriate mix of
    personnel are available to meet daily unit needs
    and organizational goals.
  • OR
  • It is the process of determining and assigning
    the right personnel with the right qualifications
    to the job in a right time to accomplish the
    purposes of the organization.

Methods of calculating staffing
  • 1-Patient classification system
  • It is system developed to objectively
    determine workload requirements and staffing
    needs
  • There are two types of patient classification
    system
  • a- Descriptive to all patient needs and nursing
    requirements.
  • b- prototype evaluation method

descriptions of care routines into
activity categories. Time standard
measures of patients care activities for
direct and indirect care.

  • 2- Diagnostic related groups
  • Based on the medical diagnosis of the
    patients.
  • 3- Acuity and complexity of care
  • Estimate how many hours of nursing care
    will be needed during a particular shift. When
    that information is collected for every patient
    on the unit, the total number of hours care
    required will give an indication of the number
    and type of nursing staff needed on the unit for
    that shift.
