2Idea for the Concept of a Laboratory School
We plan to focus on Pre-K through 4th grade in
one culturally and linguistically diverse
elementary school in Harrisonburg City Public
Schools (HCPS), with the intention of providing a
comprehensive, inter-disciplinary curriculum that
promotes the cognitive, social, and emotional
development of students ranging from
approximately three to ten years of age.
3This partnership laboratory school will seek to
(a) Develop innovative teaching and learning
programs for preschool through grade four
students through a multi-tiered assessment and
intervention model (b) Foster an environment
for evidence-based practices in instruction,
assessment, classroom management, and school
design (c) Foster greater collaboration across
content areas, between grade levels, between
departments within the COE and with school
leadership personnel (d) Create an environment
that fosters open communication and collaboration
among the teacher candidates, in-service
teachers, COE faculty, and the school community
(e) provide effective professional development
to in-service teachers that is sustained and
embedded within the context of their school
culture (Desimone et al., 2002 Yoon et al.,
2007) through the use of instructional coaching
models.
4Development of Partnerships
5Status Report on the Planning
- The proposed planning project will include five
phases - comprehensive literature review of best practices
in university-school partnerships - development of data collection tools based on
results of the literature review to be used at
targeted site visits - systematic evaluation of a diverse sample of
existing lab schools through on-site visits - comprehensive program evaluation of the proposed
lab school site in Harrisonburg City Public
Schools - analysis of data from site visits and program
evaluation leading to the development of a
comprehensive plan for a lab school partnership
model with HCPS.
