Millions of visitors every year from all over the
world are attracted to Brighton's colourful
atmosphere. Highlights include its theatres and
clubs, fashionable shops, hotels, cafes and
restaurants, its famous antique markets and
exotic Royal Pavilion, its huge marina, and of
course its lively beach and sea front promenade
and grand Victorian Piers. Surrounded by
beautiful English countryside and near to the
famous Sussex Downs and white cliffs, Brighton is
small enough to get to know easily and safely,
and yet it is only 50 minutes by train from the
centre of London. There is so much for everyone
to enjoy and Brighton's friendly and relaxed
atmosphere makes it the perfect choice for
students of any age.

Established in 1984, Brighton
International Summer School (BISS)
specialises in English language and activity
courses for young pupils aged 5 to 18. We
offer the chance to study English and learn about
British culture in a safe, caring
environment, at our small friendly family run
school that places a high emphasis on personal
service. Lessons take place at DOROTHY
STRINGER HIGH SCHOOL,a local British school with
over 1,000 British students aged 11-16,
with whom there are lots of opportunities to
integrate for sport, arts and other cultural
activities.

DOROTHY STRINGER HIGH SCHOOL values its
partnership with BISS, and welcomes
international students into their community
believing such visits are of cultural and
educational benefit to its own British students,
as well as to their overseas guests. The
school is large with fantastic modern
facilities, and is located in a good residential
area of Brighton, from where we also
select our host families, and within easy reach
of the city centre shops and beach.
BRIGHTON itself is a vibrant, exciting
seaside resort, hugely popular with overseas
students, under one hour by train to
LONDON

at teaching English to school age students
and children, and understand the challenges faced
by young people staying in a foreign

by a qualified teacher, trained at an English
university and experienced in teaching English to
foreign students. Classes have a maximum of 15

Teenage Programme (Ages 13-18) The BISS Teenage
programme is run at Dorothy Stringer High School,
an excellent British school with over 1000
students aged 12-16, until the end of the summer.
The school has excellent sports facilities,
including sports hall, basketball courts, tennis
courts, trampolines, dance studio, swimming pool
and access to computers, library and cafeteria.
12
At Dorothy Stringer there are many opportunities
to mix with the English students (eg for sports,
drama, art), until their term finishes at the end
of July. We then have the school facilities to
ourselves as we work along side our junior and
local English children on vacation, as well as
other multi-national students from different
countries. The school is located near Preston
Park, a good safe residential area of Brighton,
and a short distance to the city centre, shops
and beach (5 minutes by the No 5b bus). Sports
activities and excursions are organised every
afternoon and some evenings (eg disco).

Entrance fees are included for those booking our
Full Programme. Optional extra mid-week trips to
London can also organised for shopping or
sightseeing. Older Teenage students (16) are
given the freedom to explore Brighton in small
groups after lessons if they wish. For serious

A relaxed and caring family atmosphere is the
best possible environment in which to learn
English. BISS have carefully selected a number of
English families who are waiting to welcome our
teenage students. Students are encouraged not
only to learn English but also to participate in
British family life. Most families have children
of their own, and students will be treated as
'one of the family'. Our families provide all
meals, laundry service, full care and
supervision. Accommodation is in twin rooms, but
some single rooms can be booked. Religious and
other dietary requirements can be catered for, in
most cases. Please advise at the time of booking
and we will be pleased to discuss this with you.
We try to place students in families that are
within walking distance from school. However in
the busy summer months this is not always
possible, and some students will need to travel
to school by bus. For a supplement it is possible
to guarantee a family that is close to school or
book a daily taxi collection service. It is also
possible to book a guarantee that there will be
no students of the same nationality in the family
- meaning English is the only language spoken.
18
We strongly recommend that all students buy a bus
pass - Brighton is easy to get around by bus, and
our experience is that all students want bus
passes irrespective of their family location.
Dorothy Stringer School is located near a No 5b
bus stop.
