  • Significant sales to Government and Prime
    Contractors to Government
  • From Defence to Local Authorities

11
Why sell to the Government?
  • They WANT to buy from YOU.
  • The government is committed to helping small and
    medium-sized businesses compete successfully for
    public-sector contracts.

12
  • Open for business with small firms
  • We are responsible for developing business
    opportunities for small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs), with up to 500 employees.
'Value for money' is the only deciding factor
when we award contracts competitively but, given
our wider responsibility, we strongly encourage
SMEs to bid for the departmental contracts they
    believe they could fulfill.

13
  • Process getting more open..
  • Public sector bodies have to employ tendering
processes that are transparent, provide essential
information to potential suppliers and ensure a
    fair chance for small businesses.

14
The government customer base is vast.
  • Potential customers could include
  • Central government departments and agencies
  • Devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and
    Northern Ireland
  • Local authorities
  • National Health Service
  • Police service
  • Armed forces
  • Universities, Colleges and Schools
  • Prisons
  • Approx 1200 Quangos, including Network Rail

15
  • Whether you sell stationery, office furniture,
    medical supplies, IT equipment, catering
    services, machinery, building services or
training courses, there's likely to be a market
for your product or service within government.

16
Big spenders..
  • Each year the public sector spends around 220
billion on goods and services. Local government
alone spends 40 billion a year on goods and
    services.
  • Selling products or services to government bodies
is an important opportunity for all businesses

Can I borrow 178bn?
20
Every disaster is an opportunity
  • Likely increase in outsourcing in the wake of
future cuts in public spending as public services
contracted to the private sector after the May
    (?) election.
  • The Conservative party is committed to making
deep cuts in public spending to curb Britain's
rising budget deficit but whichever party takes
over this year will need to slash the deficit by
outsourcing more services to save money.
  • CBI has set up the Public Services Strategy
Board, which is pushing for more public services
    to be outsourced.

21
  • Central and local governments are increasingly
turning to the private sector to carry out
    everything from hospital cleaning, defence
training, refuse collection to building schools
    and hospitals.
  • Example Essex county council is planning to put
out to tender a third of its budget.

22
  • For local authorities and government, the
advantage of outsourcing is it saves them money
  • According to the DeAnne Julius report
    commissioned by the government, services
outsourced to the private sector cost 20 less.
  • Many of these savings are a result of private
sector companies needing fewer staff and
thousands of public sector jobs are at risk
  • However, with a budget deficit of 178bn and
    rising, the attraction is obvious.

23
Access to information
  • Designed specifically to give companies easy
    access to lower-value contract opportunities
(typically worth under 100,000) offered by the
    public sector.

opportunity to post their lower-value contract
    opportunities and access profiles of
    pre-qualification information created by
    suppliers registering on the site

lowervalue contract alerts in a local location
of your choice. Lowervalue contracts in your
chosen local location and throughout the rest of
the UK can also be accessed online via the
contract search facility free of charge.
