The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test-OSSLT
  • A diploma requirement
  • Will be administered in the Spring of grade 10
  • Retake if not successful
  • In-class and after school preparation sessions in
    grades 9 and 10
  • OSSLC in grade 12 if necessary

Community Involvement
  • A diploma requirement
  • Helping others enhances the self-image of
    students and fosters a greater sense of
    belonging. Experiences in the community may also
    influence career choices.
  • (Parents) should not act as formal community
    activity sponsors for their own children.
  • Complete a minimum of 40 hours before graduation
    to be completed outside normal instructional
    hours after June 2012.

  • Offered at all grade levels
  • Not specific to any particular post-secondary
    destination
  • Include curriculum expectations suitable to all
    students
  • Can be used to meet compulsory or optional
    requirements

Essential-Type Courses a.k.a. Locally
Developed Courses
  • Intended for students entering grade 9, who have
    not yet completed the grade 8 expectations
  • Available in English, Mathematics and Science
  • Can be used to meet up to 6 compulsory
    requirements

Applied type courses
  • Similar learning and assessment activities as
    Academic type courses
  • Available in English, French, Geography, History,
    Mathematics, and Science
  • Intended for students who completing their grade
    8 expectations with some assistance
  • Fewer abstract ideas than in Academic
  • Slower pace in some parts
  • Less in-depth coverage in other areas
  • A more practical, hands-on approach

    Applied type courses
  • Available in English, French, Geography, History,
    Mathematics, and Science
  • Intended for students who complete their grade 8
    expectations quickly and with little or no
    difficulty
  • More abstract ideas than in Applied
  • Faster paced in some parts
  • More in-depth coverage in other areas
  • Both practical and theoretical applications

  • Crossover from one type to the other in
    English, French, or Science

Math is Different
  • Crossing over from applied to academic in Math is
    not necessary because both pathways may lead to
    the most intense grade 12 university Calculus and
    Vectors if you wish.
  • The only difference is that the academic pathway
    is shorter by one course.

  • given to you by your teacher.
  • All responses are due back to ECSS by
  • Friday, February 17, 2012.
  • Between February 11 and February 17, you will not
    be able to make any changes after you click
    SUBMIT.
  • You will be given a final opportunity to verify
    and confirm your selections in April.
