Unit One Learning About Our World
2
Why It Matters
  • A while ago it was common for people to spend
most of their lives in the same town or place in
    which they were born.
  • Today, your neighbor may be someone from another
state, another country, or another continent.

Chapter One Our Social World
Section One People Far and Near
4
Guide to Reading
  • Main Idea
  • Modern technology has helped to bring the worlds
    diverse peoples closer together.
  • Key Terms
  • ethnic group
  • custom
  • minority group
  • majority group

5
Did You Know?
  • According to Scientific American
(http//www.sciam.com) the world has 5,000 ethnic
groups but only 190 countries. Sub-Saharan
Africa alone has about 1,300 language groups in
    42 countries.

6
Technology Shrinks the World
  • With modern technology, the worlds people have
    been brought closer together.
  • By studying other people and countries, you will
be able to see connections between the United
States and the world around us.

7
Technology Shrinks the World
  • When the first telephone cable was laid along the
bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in 1956, it could
carry only 89 calls between Europe and North
    America at one time.
  • Forty years later, glass cables as fine as hairs
were carrying 3 million long-distance calls at
    once.
  • Inventions are changing the world and it is
    changing faster every year.

8
Technology Shrinks the World
  • The Internet is possible because of improved
    telephone cables, satellites, and computers.

9
Discussion Question
  • How do you become an informed member of the
    global village?

10
The World Next Door
  • American communities include various groups of
peoples called ethnic groups. An ethnic group is
a group of people who have a common origin, and
share a language and a history.

11
The World Next Door
  • Often ethnic groups are also minorities. A
minority group is a group of people whose
culture, race, sex, or ethnic origin is different
from most of the people in the region.

12
The World Next Door
  • Sometimes, but not always, the minority group is
    treated differently from the majority.
  • The majority is the group in society that
controls most of the wealth and power.
  • However, it is not always the largest group in
    numbers.

13
The World Next Door
  • Schools are the place where most young people
first meet people from other ethnic groups.

14
Discussion Question
  • What are three divisions between ethnic groups?

15
Section 1 Assessment
  1. Explain the difference between a minority group
    and an ethnic group.
  2. In what country was the group that controlled the
wealth and power not the largest ethnic group?
  3. In what way is technology shrinking the world?
    Give examples.
  4. Why do you think minority groups are sometimes
    treated differently from the majority?
  5. What do you think it means that some groups are
divided by religious beliefs and values?

16

circles, write the types of food, clothing,
language, music, and so on found in your culture.
