Title: The Bulgarian engineering industry in the European automotive sector

1
The Bulgarian engineering industry in the
European automotive sector challenges and
opportunities
  • Electric vehicles challenges of the new
    mobility Conference
  • Sofia, the Hilton Hotel
  • 10-11/02/2011

2
Background of the Past
  • The Bulgarian engineering industry (mechanical,
    metalworking, electrical, electronic, hydraulic)
has reached in the 80s significant achievements
and experience in cargo vehicles and the means of
    internal factory transport.
  • Particular development as an engineering
infrastructure was assigned to the production of
electrical and engine fork lifts with leading
    positions on the global market.
  • The production of automobiles in Bulgaria was
limited to attempts in assembling Renault and
Moskwitch cars. This could not be classified as
an real automotive industry and didnt create the
    necessary experience.
  • Our industry established professional positions
in the production of electrical automotive
components and parts (alternators, relays, coils)
for the automotive industry of the former Soviet
    Union.

3
Restructuring
  • Peculiarities of the privatization of the
    engineering industries in our country
    interrupting of the technological chains,
liquidation of bigger companies with investment
potential, liquidation of the established RD
    potential.
  • Structure of the Bulgarian industry mainly as
    sub-supplier to leading industrial branches.
  • Restructuring of property, markets, product
    series.
  • The chance of the individual factory to
integrate itself with the European industry.
  • The chance of the European industry to remain
competitive eastward expansion, not only of the
market but also of the manufacturing base.

4
The role of foreign investments
  • Investments as capital, as bricks or as
generator of financial means in industry
  • Investments in industry
  • New markets
  • Jobs
  • Transfer of technologies, quality and modern
    management
  • Transfer of systems for career advance and
opportunities for realization of elite education
  • Transfer of mentality with modern economic
    thinking and salubrious competition
  • Establishment of local sub-suppliers network
additional jobs and mentality transfer to
    sub-suppliers

of WEVA during the EVS9 in Toronto, November 1988
  • The development is still not completed and
    continues for the time being
  • Why electric vehicles? green industry
  • Green mobility but first and foremost new
    markets in the post-crisis period
  • We should never forget the e-vehicle must
consume green energy, otherwise it is an end in
    itself.
