5NSS NYKS in Disaster Management
- Thrust areas Health, Literacy, Environment and
Disaster Management (DM) - National Service Scheme (NSS) and Nehru Yuva
Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) support disaster relief
and rehabilitation work in affected areas - During natural disasters in various parts of
India NSS efforts in rescue, relief and
rehabilitation have been appreciated - In many parts of India shelters for shelterless
have been constructed
6NSS has been on humanitarian response a felt
need to develop specialized skills for
constructive role in pre-disaster phase.

7Envisaged role of NSS
- Facilitate Community Contingency Planning -
Community being the first responder, NSS to help
develop DM Plans at community level and enhance
its capacity - Being a potent social mobilizer, NSS to help
mainstream DM into day-to-day lives - Generate awareness and sensitize the masses
- NSS helps reduce vulnerabilities and risks
through regular and special programmes - To promote safety and awareness programmes in
educational institutions - Training and capacity building of DMCs and DMTs

- Sensitization and Awareness Generation
- Development of Preparedness and Response Plans at
the Community and Administrative levels - Development of Techno-legal regime and Capacity
Building at all levels - Knowledge Networking with various agencies

- Information, Education and Communication
(IEC). material developed and is being
distributed to communities, schools, Residential
Welfare Associations (RWAs), markets, offices
etc. - Material includes posters, leaflets, manuals
etc.
