NSS NYKS in Disaster Management
  • Thrust areas Health, Literacy, Environment and
    Disaster Management (DM)
  • National Service Scheme (NSS) and Nehru Yuva
    Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) support disaster relief
    and rehabilitation work in affected areas
  • During natural disasters in various parts of
    India NSS efforts in rescue, relief and
    rehabilitation have been appreciated
  • In many parts of India shelters for shelterless
    have been constructed

NSS has been on humanitarian response a felt
need to develop specialized skills for
constructive role in pre-disaster phase.
Primary Focus of NSS

Envisaged role of NSS
  • Facilitate Community Contingency Planning -
    Community being the first responder, NSS to help
    develop DM Plans at community level and enhance
    its capacity
  • Being a potent social mobilizer, NSS to help
    mainstream DM into day-to-day lives
  • Generate awareness and sensitize the masses
  • NSS helps reduce vulnerabilities and risks
    through regular and special programmes
  • To promote safety and awareness programmes in
    educational institutions
  • Training and capacity building of DMCs and DMTs

  • Sensitization and Awareness Generation
  • Development of Preparedness and Response Plans at
    the Community and Administrative levels
  • Development of Techno-legal regime and Capacity
    Building at all levels
  • Knowledge Networking with various agencies

    (IEC). material developed and is being
    distributed to communities, schools, Residential
    Welfare Associations (RWAs), markets, offices
    etc.

    etc.
