What are caffeinated alcoholic beverages (CABs)?
  • Premixed beverages that combine caffeine, alcohol
    and other stimulants.
  • The caffeine in these drinks can mask the
    depressant effects of alcohol.
  • Drinkers who consume alcohol mixed with energy
drinks are 3 times more likely to binge drink.
  • Because CABs may have higher alcohol content than
beer, some states (e.g., Montana) have classified
CABs as liquor, thereby limiting the locations
where these beverages can be sold.

4
Types of Drinking
  • Drinking in moderation is defined as having no
more than 1 drink per day for women and no more
than 2 drinks per day for men.
  • Binge drinking is defined as a pattern of alcohol
consumption that brings the blood alcohol
concentration (BAC) level to 0.08 or more.
  • For men, heavy drinking is typically defined as
consuming an average of more than 2 drinks per
day. For women, heavy drinking is typically
defined as consuming an average of more than 1
    drink per day.

5
Alcoholism VS. Alcohol Abuse
  • Alcoholism
  • Alcohol Abuse
  • A strong craving for alcohol.
  • Continued use despite repeated physical,
    psychological, or interpersonal problems.
  • The inability to limit drinking.
  • Failure to fulfill major responsibilities at
    work, school, or home.
  • Drinking in dangerous situations, such as
drinking while driving or operating machinery.
  • Continued drinking despite ongoing relationship
problems that are caused or worsened by drinking.
  • Long-term alcohol abuse can turn into alcohol
    dependence.
