A little history
  • Petroleum base oils contain varying amounts of
    paraffinic, aromatic and naphthenic hydrocarbon
    type molecules.
  • The American Petroleum Institute (API)
categorized these base oils, along with synthetic
base oils, in 1990 to help marketers when
blending licensed engine oils with base oils from
    different manufacturing sources.

6
5
BASE OIL GROUPS
7
Group I
  • Most rudimentary of all types of base oils
  • Mix of hydrocarbon chains with little or no
    uniformity
  • Typically less demanding applications
  • Example Compressor Oils

8
Group II
  • Common for motor oils
  • Limited by poor performance in cold temperatures
  • Sulfur content and saturates are regulated
  • Example Compressor, Vacuum Pump and
  • White Oil hydraulic oils

9
Group III
  • Semi-Synthetic ---- Synthetic
  • Sometimes called High Viscosity Index paraffinic
    oils
  • Hydro cracking and solvent de-waxing to enhance
    performance
  • Enhances molecular structure to improve temp,
    viscosity index, and overall stability
  • Example Compressor Oils / Gear Oils

10
Group IV
  • Polyalphaolefins (PAO)
  • Considered one of the first real synthetic
    (synthesized)
  • Considerable performance over petroleum
  • Cost effective
  • Environmentally friendly - lower disposal costs
  • Example Food Grade, Grease, Compressor, Gear and
    Bearing oils

11
Group V
  • Includes all other chemically engineered
synthetic oils not included in groups I-IV.
  • Diesters, Polyol Esters (POE),
  • Polyalkylene Glycols (PAG) and silicone
  • Usually designed for demanding applications

12
In addition
  • Additives
  • Liquid and Powder Form
  • Surface Protection Antiwear, Extreme Pressure
(EP) agents, detergents and corrosion inhibitors
  • Enhance Performance Pour point depressants,
viscosity modifiers, seal swell agents and
    friction modifiers
  • Protection Antifoams, antioxidant and metal
    deactivators

13
Synthetic Characteristics
.
14
Synthetic Characteristics
  • Polyalphaolefins (PAO)
  • High Flash Point
  • Low Pour Point
  • High Viscosity Index
  • Good Compatibility
  • Good Oxidative Stability
  • Good Thermal Characteristics

PAOs are often recommended for use where
anti-wear or EP additives are needed and where
compatibility with plastics, rubbers and paints
is required.
15
Synthetic Characteristics
  • Esters
  • Natural Detergency
  • Better Biodegradability Than Most Other Base
    Oils
  • Wide Operating Temperature Range
  • Excellent Oxidative Stability
  • Excellent Thermal Stability
  • Low Volatility
  • Low Friction

Esters are often used for higher temperatures and
where carbon residue from hydrocarbons is a
problem.
16
Synthetic Characteristics
  • Polyglycols
  • Wide Operating Temperature
  • Exceptional Cleanliness No Tars Sludge
  • Available in Water Soluble Water Insoluble
    Forms
  • Excellent Anti-wear Properties with no
    Additives
  • Available in Wide Verity of Viscosities
  • Some are H-1 Approved
  • High Viscosity Index (VIgt200)
  • Low Traction Coefficient
  • Resistant to Hydrocarbon Dilution

D-A Lubricant Co. is more than just oil or grease
Its a philosophy of
partnering just like combining the right narrow
cut base oils and additives to make the highest
quality lubricants. We want to be your
lubrication resource, from solving problems,
looking for innovative new approaches to
traditional problems, or devising new and better
lubricants together.   Well help you analyze
your lubrication maintenance program and design
innovative solutions to keep your equipment
running and reduce your operating costs. Well
work side by side with your people to show them,
to train them, to help them understand how
lubrication fits into good preventative
maintenance practices.   We will deliver the oil
where and when you need it, test your used oil
samples and help you evaluate the results. Were
involved from the moment our product reaches your
location.   D-As Direct Sales Force and
Technical Managers serve as your personal
lubrication consultants. We want to assemble the
