• The US gov. struggled to get support from their
  citizens

The Tet Offensive

• In 1968, the Vietcong attacked S. Vietnam during
  the Tet holiday.
• It became evident that the Vietnam War could last
  for many more years

Back at Home

• In 1970, 5 student protesters were killed at Kent
  State.
• Richard Nixon became president in 1968
• Nixon slowly pulled US troops out of Vietnam
• 58,000 US troops were killed overall

More Civil Rights

• Cesar Chavez fought for Latino rights with the
  United Farm Workers
• The American Indian Movement fought for Native
  Americans
• Feminism becomes popular

• The Hippie counterculture gained a massive
  following
• In 1969, the Woodstock festival attracted
  400,000 people
• Bob Dylan wrote many protest songs

Nixon as President

• Nixon visited China and improved relations with
  the communist gov.
• He also traveled to Russia and signed the SALT I
  treaty to limit nuclear arms

  Watergate hotel which was the democratic HQ.
• They stole documents hoping to steal strategy.
• Nixon secretly taped conversations in the White
  House
• Nixon resigned in 1974
