Unit Information
  • The Geography GCSE is designed to develop a range
    of relevant skills and knowledge from students
    previous study of Geography. It will introduce
    them to new skills, new places and new ideas. It
    will also allow students to apply what they are
    learning and understand more about how peoples
    decisions shape the world we live in.

Unit Information
  • Unit A1 The Physical World
  • Unit A1s theme is the physical world. It covers
    Rivers, Glaciation and Coasts.
  • Unit A2 The Human World
  • Unit A2s theme is the human world. Studies
    include Population Change, Population Structure
    and its Characteristics and Settlements.
  • Unit A3 The Economic World
  • Unit 3s theme is the economic world. In this
    unit, students will study Economic Systems,
    Farming Systems and Location of Industry.

  • Unit A4s theme is The Natural World. Students
    will study air masses and weather, world climates
    and forest communities.
  • Unit B5 Managing the Environment
  • Unit B5s theme is Managing the Environment. In
    this unit, students will study coastal
    management, river management and fragile
    environments.
  • Unit C7 Managing Tourism
  • Unit C7s theme is Managing Tourists.
    Throughout this unit, students study growth of
    global tourism, impact on people and environments
    and management issues.

Unit Information
  • Coursework
  • An investigation based on primary data
    collection. Candidates are required to use ICT at
    various stages in their investigation. The
    coursework write-up will be a maximum of 2,000
    words.
  • The coursework project is on Tourism in Dubai.

What is involved?
  • The course is made up of a series of core units
    that cover the themes of physical and human
    geography while the option units (B5 C7) look
    at interrelationships between people and the
    environment which give a broad and balanced
    overview of the subject. A variety of teaching
    methods are used including discussions of topical
    issues, debates, simulations, videos, fieldwork
    as well as more traditional methods.

Summary of Scheme of Assessment
  • Assessment occurs in two tiers. Foundation tier
    candidates take papers 1F and 2F and submit one
    item of coursework. This tier is targeted at
    grades C to G. Higher tier candidates take papers
    3H and 4H and also submit on item of coursework.
    This is targeted at grades A to D.

What could I do next with GCSE Geography
  • A GCSE in Geography is a stepping-stone to a
    whole range of future opportunities. A good grade
    will help you move onto any A/S or A Level
    course. Alternatively, employment opportunities
    where your geographical skills will be
    particularly valued include journalism and the
    media, law, engineering, business management,
    ICT, environmental management, teaching, economic
    planning, marketing, leisure, recreation and
    tourism.
