SYSTEM SOFTWARE Operating Systems
2
  • After this lecture you will
  • Know what system software is
  • Know what an operating system is
  • Know the functions of an operating system

What is System software?
  • Package of basic programs that make the computer
    function effectively
  • Pre-written - usually supplied by the vendor
  • Must be loaded into the computer's memory before
    applications software can be loaded
  • Forms platform from which application software
    can operate

5
System software consists of
  • Basic input/Output system (BIOS)
  • Operating systems
  • Utility programs
  • Program translators
  • Communication software
  • Database management software

6
About the BIOS
  • Determines the type of screen
  • Determines the type of keyboard
  • Disk drives are tested
  • Communication and printer ports are tested
  • RAM is tested
  • Searches for operating system and loads it into
    RAM

7
What is an Operating system?
  • An operating system is a program, or set of
programs, driving the raw hardware of a computer,
which manages the resources of the computer.
  • The CPU is the most important hardware component.
  • The OS is the most important software component.
The OS is the link between the hardware and the
software, the hardware and the user.

8
Operating system
  • The main collection of programs that manage a
    computers activities
  • manages and controls
  • checks that users requests are valid and
    processed in an orderly way
  • manages the computers resources to perform
    operations with efficiency and consistency

Objectives of Operating system
  • use the resources of the computer as effectively
    and efficiently as possible
  • minimize the time taken between starting data
processing and obtaining results - minimize
    turnaround time
  • maximize the quantity of processing per time unit
    - maximize output
  • conceal the difficulties of dealing directly with
    the hardware of the computer
  • present an interface (link) to applications
    software

12
Operating System functions
  • Interacting with users
  • Housekeeping/Accounting/Monitoring activities
  • Providing utilities
  • Anti-Virus / Compression / ScanDisk /
    DiskDefragmenter / DiskCleanup
  • Error Handling / Protection / Security
  • Memory Management
  • Primary Memory Management
  • Secondary Memory Management
  • Time Allocation
  • Making resources available/Scheduling resources
    jobs
  • Input Output Control
  • Buffering
  • Spooling

13
Desirable feature of an OS
Efficiency Carry out tasks quickly, with minimum disruption of application software
Reliability Crucial, because failure can cause a loss of operational data - computer then useless
Maintainability Modifications (changes) to the OS can easily be made
Small Size Should not take up a large part of the computer's memory
14
Various Operating systems
  • Windows 9X
  • Windows NT
  • Mac OS
  • UNIX
  • LINUX
