Title: Airport Operations

1
Airport Operations
  • Tom Johnson CFIG

2
Airport Operations
  • Sailplane Assembly and Disassembly
  • Ground Operations
  • Runway Incursions
  • Land and Hold Short (LAHSO)
  • Situational Awareness

3
Sailplane Assembly and Disassembly
  • Erect multiple barriers to prevent mistakes
  • Glider assembly process
  • POH, or other written, instructions
  • Limit distractions
  • Knowledgeable assistant
  • Suitable space
  • Post assembly checklist
  • Positive Control Check
  • Critical Assembly Check

4
Sailplane Assembly and Disassembly
l
Is this a good assembly area? Why? Why not?
5
Sailplane Assembly and Disassembly
  • What are the threats to properly assembling the
    sailplane?
  • How do you mitigate them?
  • How is the disassembly process different?

6
Ground Operations
7
Ground Operations
  • At your Gliderport, you probably have
  • Signs and markings
  • Ground personnel procedures
  • Visitor procedures
  • Segregation of flight operations
  • New member education
  • SSF Wing Runner Course
  • Others?

Whether you know it or not, you have a Ground
Movement Safety Program
8
GROUND MOVEMENT SAFETY PROGRAM
  • Gliderport probably has
  • Easy ground access
  • Signs welcoming visitors
  • No physical separation barriers
  • Cars/Golf carts driven by kids towing gliders
  • General Aura of Casualness regarding equipment
such as Ropes, Cables, and Propellers

9
GROUND MOVEMENT SAFETY PROGRAM
How do you train new people about the dangers at
the field? How do you control access to the
runway? To the Gliders? Glider tow-out
procedures can anyone drive the golf cart or are
they trained? Does the driver have a radio?
Phone?
10
Ground Movement Safety Program
  • What are the threats to ground operations?
  • How do you mitigate them?
  • What resources are available to facilitate safe
    ground movement at your gliderport?

11
RUNWAY INCURSIONS
  • Major Safety Issue ----- FIRC Core Topic
  • CFIGs Play Major Role in Combatting Incursions

12
Runway Incursions
Something or someone who should not be on the
runway when aircraft operations are underway.
13
RUNWAY INCURSIONS
  • Not limited to aircraft
  • Visitors
  • Cars
  • Line Rats
  • Other Animals
  • What about motorgliders at public usage airports?

14
RUNWAY INCURSIONS
Air Carrier Pilots at Primary Airports It is a
consistent problem for the pros. What about us
Joes?
15
Runway Incursions
  • How do you keep unwanted people or objects off of
    your runway?
  • What about a public usage airport?

16
Does your airport have something like this?
17
Do you teach this?
18
Land and Hold Short OperationsLAHSO
  • Program began so big airports could move more
    traffic
  • Pilots may accept such a clearance provided that
the pilot-in-command determines that the aircraft
can safely land and stop within the Available
    Landing Distance
  • If there is a risk of bursting through the
    limit
  • Or if you do not believe you can comply, DO
    NOT ACCEPT the clearance

20
Does LAHSO apply to gliders at uncontrolled
airports?
21
LAHSO
  • The pilot-in-command has the final authority to
accept or decline any land and hold short
clearance. The safety and operation of the
aircraft remain the responsibility of the pilot.
Pilots are expected to decline a LAHSO clearance
if they determine it will compromise safety.

22
LAHSO
  • Does LAHSO apply at your field?
  • What are the threats inherent with LAHSO?
  • How do you mitigate them?

23
Situational Awareness
  • Good SA is key to safe, successful airport
    operations
  • How do you build good SA?
  • SPRM
  • Communication
  • Training
  • Standardization

24
SA
  • Ground Situational Awareness is
  • Where am I?
  • Where am I going?
  • How am I getting there?
  • Who is around me?
  • What are the threats around me?
  • Weather
  • Terrain
  • Obstructions
  • Other

25
Scenario 1
Pilot-Experienced glass pilot Aircraft as
shown enVironment- as shown Ex Factors- airport
owner concerned about fuel pump area ops
You have just assembled your glider. What are
three threats you can identify for this normal
ops tow out to the launch area?
26
Scenario 2
Pilot-student on second solo Aircraft-as
shown enVironment- light wind down runway
flowing over drop-off at runway end Ex Factors-
line crew has cart stuck in mud, and glider
fouling tunway
What is the threat? What do you do?
27
Scenario 3
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vE4rAMdtL7S0
  • What is good and bad about this launch?
