1
Chapter 13 Alcohol A Dangerous Drug
  • Section 13.1

2
What Are We Covering?
  • Core Content
  • PL-HS-1.1.6 Students will analyze the effect of
individual behavior choices and habits relating
to diet, exercise, rest and other choices (e.g.,
tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use) on various
    body systems (e.g., circulatory, respiratory,
    nervous, digestive).
  • PL-HS-1.1.8 Students will explain risks
associated with unhealthy habits and behaviors
    (e.g., dietary, physical activity, tobacco,
alcohol, steroids, other substance abuse, sexual
    activity, violent/aggressive behavior).
  • PL-HS-1.1.9 Students will compare causes,
symptoms, consequences and treatments of mental
    and emotional problems (e.g., depression,
    anxiety, drug abuse, addictions, eating
    disorders, aggressive behaviors) for individuals
    and families
  • Essential Questions
  • What are the effects of alcohol on the body?

3
Bell Ringer
  • What is mainstream smoke?
  • What is sidestream smoke?
  • How long does it take for nicotine to go through
the blood stream and into the brain?

4
Blood Alcohol Level
  • Blood Alcohol Level- percentage of alcohol I a
    persons bloodstream
  • Influenced by gender, weight, food in stomach,
    and rate of drinking
  • One drink is enough to raise BAL to .025
  • Under 21 legally intoxicated at .02
  • Over 21 legally intoxicated at .08

5
Alcohol in the Body
  • Once alcohol is swallowed, it goes to the stomach
    and then the small intestine
  • From stomach and SI, it is absorbed into
    bloodstream
  • Travels to all cells and tissues, including the
brain (effects are felt within minutes)
  • Eventually reaches liver, where broken down to
    carbon monoxide and water
  • The more you drink, the harder your liver has to
work (one hour to break down alcohol in one
    bottle of beer)

6
Short Term Effects
  • Feel relaxed (alcohol is a depressant)
  • Skin feels flush and warm due to the dilation
    (widening) of blood vessels
  • Urinate frequently
  • Lack of coordination and inhibition
  • Hangover (headache, sick stomach, dizziness)

7
Long Term Effects
  • Alcohol leaves fat deposits on liver cells
  • Hepatitis- inflammation or infection of the liver
that can cause fever, yellowing of the skin,
    weakness, and even death
  • Cirrhosis- liver cells permanently replaced by
    scar tissue
  • Often suffer digestive problems because the body
no longer is able to metabolize food properly
  • People with cirrhosis who continue to drink have
only 50 chance of living more than five years

8
Long Term Effects
  • Damage to heart muscle
  • Increased risk of heart disease
  • Increased risk of breast cancer
  • Interrupt REM sleep
  • Reduce white blood cell count, necessary to fight
    infection
  • Kills brain cells (memory damage)
  • Increased risk of cancer of liver, esophagus, and
    larynx

9
Myth vs Fact
  • Myth You cant get as drunk from beer and wine as
    you can from liquor
  • Fact A bottle of beer, glass of wine, and a shot
of liquor have the same amount of alcohol

10
Myth vs Fact
  • Myth A person who looks and acts sober is sober
  • Fact Not everyone shows the effects of alcohol
in the same way. People who seem completely sober
are dangerous drivers if they have been drinking

11
Myth vs Fact
  • Myth Alcohol cant be as dangerous as drugs
because its legal for people over 21
  • Fact Even though alcohol is legal for people
over 21, when it is abused it is just as
    dangerous as many illegal drugs
