2We are comprised of two components
- Area Health Education Center (AHEC)Links medical
students and the medical school to the community
through health education and non-medical
community service - Community Health Programs (CHP)Provides free or
low-cost health services to residents of
Southeastern Ohio. - In 2005, CHP and AHEC united under one director,
Kathy Trace, MHA.
3CHP Staff
- Each of our programs is coordinated by our highly
qualified and dedicated staff. - We are continually developing new programs to
better meet health needs in Appalachia.
4Background
- In 1994, the Childhood Immunization Program began
with one mobile medical unit. - The program grew in subsequent years to meet
other health needs in the area. - In 2001, a second mobile medical unit was added.
- The efforts were renamed Community Health
Programs in 2006.

Community Health Programs
- Provides perinatal education to high-risk
pregnant women at and below the 200 poverty
level who are uninsured or underinsured - Assists with smoking cessation, nutrition,
exercise and prenatal education services - Provides depression screenings, social and
emotional support, case management and referrals
to other community agencies - Since the programs inception in 2000, preterm
birth rates in Athens County have dropped below
state and national level

- Presents information about womens health issues
