GeoHealthWatch The Widget
  • GeoHealthWatch functionality has been cleanly
encapsulated into a feature rich Widget
  • The Widget allows (re)use of the functionality on
    any HTML page Web application
  • Trivial to incorporate the Widget on HTML pages.
    See Widget Usage sidebar.
  • Follow the Widget menu link in the
GeoHealthWatch home page for further details.

Smart Filters
Inclusion Phrase Filters Only include those
Tweets, which in addition to containing the
supplied term, also contain additional phrases.
E.g. for the Common Cold Illness, contain any
of these phrases joint pain, body ache,
sore throat, headache, not going to work,
not going to school
  • Twitter public API tweet searches, using the
provided Illness Taxonomy, yields several false
positives. E.g. for the Common Cold illness,
searching tweets with the term cold, finds
tweets with the following phrases, unrelated to
    the Illness
  • cold feet, cold war, cold turkey, cold beer, cold
    weather
  • Smart Filters aims to eliminate Tweets noise and
only allow pertinent tweets to be counted
  • Smart Filters, have been currently implemented
as Inclusion Phrase Filters and Contextual
    Filters.

Context Filters Only include those Tweets, in
which the supplied term is used in a
pre-specified context. E.g. for the Common Cold
Illness, the term would need to be used in these
contexts down with TERM, have TERM like
symptoms
The exact Phrase Filters and Context Filters
used for each Illness may be found in the Smart
Filter tab of the Updated Illness Taxonomy
Spreadsheet available in the Downloads section
of the website.
An Exclusion Phrase Filter is also under
consideration but not yet implemented, where a
Tweet would be excluded if the phrase was found
in the tweet. E.g. for the Common Cold Illness,
finding the following phrases would eliminate the
Tweet from consideration cold war, cold
turkey.
