Title: OBSERVATION

1
OBSERVATION
2
OBSERVATION
  • Using senses measurements to learn about
    something

3
  • Use DETAILS to make a good observation

4
Large, small, tiny, many, and few are not good
adjectives to use. They can be misinterpreted!
5
The best way to use size in an observation is to
measure.
This is called a quantitative observation
6
Think of QUANTITIES or numbers used to count
7
The standard system for measurement is the metric
system.
8
The term metric means measurement
9
Linear Measurement
Measuring along a straight line using a ruler
10
The standard linear measurement is the meter.
11
Metric Ruler Units
12
Each small division is a millimeter (mm)
13
Every ten millimeters 1 centimeter (cm)
14
Therefore, each little line (mm) is also 1/10 or
0.1 of a centimeter.
15
The term CENTI means 1/100 or 0.01
16
Therefore, a centimeter is one hundredth (1/100)
or 0.01 of a meter.
17
How would you record the following measurement?
18
This measurement would be 1.8 cm.
19
You must always use the UNITS of how you
measured!! Meters (m), centimeters (cm), or
millimeter (mm).
20
During any type of experiment, the DATA (or
information) you collect is only as good as how
you observed and recorded it. Make GOOD
OBSERVATIONS!
