Mitosis
  • -process of cell division which results in the
    production of two daughter cells from a single
    parent

Interphase
  • Interphase is when the cell isnt in mitosis but
    it takes most of the time
  • The cell may appear inactive during this stage
    but the cell is very active.
  • This is the longest period due to the DNA
    replication
  • the centrioles divide
  • proteins are produced

Phase One Prophase
  • The 1st phase in mitosis
  • Chromosomes are already duplicated
  • The chromatin condenses and chromosomes are
    visible
  • Nuclear envelope and nucleolus break apart
  • Spindle fibers start to form
  • Centrosomes move to opposite sides of the cell
  • Aster Serve to brace the centrioles

Phase Two Prometaphase
  • Sister chromatids are ready to break apart
  • Kinetochores Disk shaped structure in the
    centromere where spindle microtubules attach
  • Kinetochoores extend from the poles of the
    chromosomes
  • Chromosomes move towards poles one at a time
    until they are lined up

Phase Three Metaphase
  • Centromeres of the chromosomes are aligned in the
    center of the cell
  • Metaphase Plate A perpendicular imaginary plane
    that passes through the center of the cell that
    indicates where future cell division will occur
  • Polar spindle fibers are present and overlap the
    metaphase plate

Phase Four Anaphase
  • Sister chromatids break and give rise to two
    daughter chromosomes
  • Daughter chromosomes have a centromere and a
    chromatid with a single double helix
  • Move toward opposite poles
  • Poles move apart because spindle fibers are
    moving past each other
  • Microtubule-associated proteins cause it to move
  • Shortest phase of mitosis

Phase Six Telophase
  • Spindle disappears
  • New nuclear envelope forms in both daughter cells

    chromosomes from the parent cell
  • Polar spindle fibers are visible between the
    nuclei
  • The chromosomes become diffused into chromatin
  • Nucleolus appears in each daughter cell
