General computer information
  • EngCad is separate from other university IT
    computer systems
  • Personal files on J drive
  • Map to IT P drive using shortcut on program menu
  • Keep 10mb available (allocated 120mb)
  • More available if needed (for work!!!)
  • Print credits are separate from IT system
  • Password problems
  • Web and email access is same as IT
  • Engcad access is original password from last year
    as it appeared on last years bill.

    Core block or computer technician in your dept.

Backing up
  • On-campus
  • A network outage or computer crash etc. could
    cause the file you are working on to be damaged.
    Save often!
  • After every session back up ½ of machines have
    CD writers and ½ have USB on front for memory
    sticks
  • Off-campus
  • Backup hard drive to CD, etc.

Viruses
  • The University has a licence for SOPHOS
    anti-virus software.
  • Use Sophos Program to scan your floppy disks
    whenever you bring them to University
  • Additionally, set Sophos to scan the files on
    your dedicated student server space. Do this once
    a week.
  • Treat e-mail Attachments with caution
  • Remember that common attachments should have a
    suffix/extension such as .doc, .txt. .htm. .xls.
  • These files can still contain harmful macro
    viruses
  • Be careful with files with .exe suffix
  • Avoid attached files that have a suffix such as
    .pif .prf .bat etc.

  • Synonyms
  • Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Symptoms associated with keyboard, mouse and
    workstation use
  • Stage 1 Aching and tiredness is felt mostly in
    the arms and neck area at the end of the day.
    This goes away when at rest.
  • Stage 2 Recurrent aching and tiredness occurs.
    It starts earlier, and lasts longer after
    finishing work. Some pain can be felt at night
    and repetitive work is harder to do. The pain
    eases on days off work.
  • Stage 3 Aching, weakness and tiredness is felt
    when at rest. Pain is evident at night and
    normal activity is severely impaired.

  • Causes
  • Long periods of maintaining the same posture at
    your computer workstation, even if it's a
    "recommended posture.
  • Extensive use of a computer mouse, especially for
    exacting tasks such as computer drawings.
  • Typing quickly for long periods with few breaks
  • Typing with the telephone receiver cradled on
    your shoulder.

  • frequent short breaks of 10-30 seconds every 15
    minutes
  • switch between computing and non-computing tasks
