Probation

• Four areas in the West of Midlands Region
• West Midlands (old BBC SHA area Cov)
• West Mercia (Herefords, Worcs, Shrops)
• Staffordshire
• Warwickshre (not inc Cov)
• As PCTs with individual management structures,
  developing into Trusts
• Provide support to anyone with custodial sentence
  over 12months and those on community sentences
• Language Offender Managers, Approved premises

Police and healthcare

• Mental Health working group X midlands
• Section 136 (places commissioned by PCTs)
• 1,956 people in WM arrested in 2007/8 under S.136
• Referral for MH/risk assessment
• If CPA, contact care co-ordinator
• Arrange MH Act Assessment if likely
• Initiate care plans
• Flag suicide/self harm if appropriate
• Link with CJS Drug team as appropriate

Courts

• Criminal Justice Liaison Services in every court
• Commissioned by PCTs except PAN Birmingham and
  Coventry, commissioned by WM SCT
• MH referral from defence, CPS, or clerk of court
  to CJS Liaison Services
• MH assessment by CJS Liaison
• Psychiatric Court Reports maybe requested
• Work on going to clarify process and payment
• Identify potential risk of suicide/self harm

Transfers

• To/between prison, courts, custody, bail hostels
  (mainly private providers)
• Commissioned by Ministry of Justice
• Operation Safeguard (use of police cells)
• not be used to hold the following prisoners in
  police cells.
• Prisoners with a crown court trial in progress.
• Female prisoners.
• Juvenile prisoners.
• Prisoners identified at being at risk of suicide
  of self-harm
• Prisoners remanded for serious offences
  potentially attracting Category A status.
• Prisoners with a documented history of escape
  attempts or significantly disruptive behaviour.
• Prisoners requiring admittance into a prison
  health care in-patients facility.
• Identify potential risk of self harm/suicide
