WHAT DO WE STUDY?
  • The course is split into two halves Russia and
    Germany.
  • Both are examined at the end of year 12.
  • Russia is also examined in a course essay in
    March.

HOW MUCH IS IT WORTH?
  • The exam is worth 35 of the AS.
  • The course essay is worth 15 of the AS.
  • The other 50 comes from the British unit.

SYLLABUS
  • You are expected to study the origins of
    Stalinist USSR and Nazi Germany for the exam.
  • There are three general themes
  • 1. Political Ideas.
  • 2. The Accession to Power.
  • 3. Consolidation.

  • The contrasts between the Bolsheviks and Tsarism,
    and the Nazis and the Weimar Democracy.
  • The ideologies of political leadership
    dictatorship of the proletariat and Fuhrerprinzip.

THE ACCESSION TO POWER
  • Political conflict within the Soviet Communist
    Party, 1924-29 (Stalin vs Trotsky).
  • The decline of the Weimar Republic, 1928-33.

  • The consolidation of totalitarian regimes by 1939
    in the USSR and Nazi Germany.
  • The one party state.
  • Propaganda and Repression.
