• John James Barralet was born in Dublin, Ireland
  in 1747. In 1770 he moved to London and studied
  at the Royal Dublin Societys drawing school. In
  1795 he immigrated to Philadelphia and worked
  commercially, making designs for a variety of
  publications from books to single sheet
  engravings.
• The Apotheosis of Washington is an oil on glass
  commemorative engraving honoring the late George
  Washington. Barralet combines Christian,
  classical and national imagery to pay homage to
  Americas first president. The Apotheosis of
  Washington is an allegorical or symbolic
  representation

What my students learned ?Nations use unifying
identities via heroes and symbols. ?George

teach history. It lends itself to visual
interpretations of historical people, events and
