  • Distance Education Leading to a Virtual
    University
  • Recommendations
  • U.T. System Virtual University will not be a
    separate, degree-granting institution. It will
enhance the ability of U.T. System components to
deliver educational services to both existing and
    emerging constituencies.
  • Create an administrative unit that will serve as
the initial focus point of the Virtual
University. Current working name for this unit
    The U.T. System TeleCampus--UTTC

  • Pilot project start date October 1, 1997

25
The University of Texas SystemInformation
Technology Initiative
  • Multimedia Educational Information Delivery
  • 1. An assessment to accomplish the following
    evaluation and
  • organizational tasks
  • a. Develop an inventory of existing
    multimedia assets and related
  • academic technologies within U.T.
    System.
  • b. Evaluate effectiveness of existing
    multimedia assets.
  • c. Assess user satisfaction with existing
    multimedia assets.
  • d. Conduct baseline needs analysis for
    multimedia instructional
  • education.
  • e. Identify best practices for the use of
    academic technologies.
  • f. Define standards for academic
    technologies such as authoring
  • tools.

26
The University of Texas SystemInformation
Technology Initiative
  • Multimedia Educational Information Delivery
  • 2. Pilot projects to develop asynchronous
training to support faculty creation of
    multimedia courseware.
  • 3. Pilot projects to develop exemplary courses or
course materials that use multimedia to
    significantly enhance the learning.
  • 4. Pilot projects to establish a new multimedia
    technology as a
  • resource for ALL system components.

27
The University of Texas SystemInformation
Technology Initiative
  • Multimedia Educational Information Delivery
  • The pilot projects should address the following
  • Promote collaboration by faculty across the U.T.
    System.
  • Promote faculty development of multimedia
educational materials and other scholarly works
    to enhance learning.
  • Provide the training and technical infrastructure
required to support the development and use of
    multimedia courseware.
  • Identify some of the critical issues that the
U.T. System must address on a larger scale to
    support this initiative

28
The University of Texas SystemInformation
Technology Initiative
  • Among the benefits to be realized by these pilot
projects and subsequent developments in this area
    are the following
  • Improve the ability to expand and enhance the
course content materials available for use in the
    classroom or across the network.
  • Provide alternative instructional delivery
    mechanisms for faculty.
  • Use visualization to increase knowledge
    retention.
  • Provide flexibility for students to pace their
    own learning.
  • Provide an effective technique for simulations.
  • Support students who learn better in
    non-traditional settings.

Technology Initiative
  • U.T. System Identification Smart Card
  • Current status - An ad hoc group of U.T. System
representatives has met with representatives of
Amtech International, Inc. to explore the
possibility of collaborative pilot projects. The
next step is to identify potential pilot projects
and begin to develop specifications for these
    projects.
  • Project start date Fall 1997

30
The University of Texas SystemInformation
Technology Initiative
