Title: What is P2

1
What is P2?
2
Pollution Prevention
  • The reduction or elimination of wastes at the
source (source reduction) instead of at the
    end-of-the pipe or stack.

3
Pollution Prevention
  • Occurs when
  • resources are utilized more effectively
  • less harmful substances are substituted for
    hazardous ones or
  • toxic substances are eliminated from production
raw materials, water, energy other processes

4
Pollution Prevention
  • There are two roads that you can take to reduce
    pollution.
  • Conservation and Efficiency

5
P2 Strategies - Input Substitution
  • Changing a raw material of input to something
    less toxic.

6
P2 Strategies - Equipment Modifications
  • An actual change or modification to equipment
    within a process

7
P2 Strategies - Process Modifications
  • Making a change to a or replacing a process

8
P2 Strategies - Product Reformulation
  • A change or modification to a product

9
P2 Strategies - Raw Material Use and Handling
  • A change to a process to incorporate recovery
    and/or re-use of a raw material

10
P2 Strategies - Material Tracking and Inventory
Control
  • A change allowing for tracking materials and
    inventory control (e.g., first-in, first-out,
    just-in-time manufacturing)

11
P2 Strategies - Improved Housekeeping
andMaintenance
  • Changes to improve housekeeping (e.g., dry
cleaning instead of wet cleaning) and maintenance
(e.g., air compressor audits and repair)

12
Waste Reduction Hierarchy
  • Source Reduction or P2 is the most preferred
strategy for reducing waste, above all others

13
Benefits of Pollution Prevention
  • Reduces costs
  • Reduces emissions to the environment
  • Reduces liabilities and risks disposal and
    workforce
  • Assists in meeting environmental regulatory
    requirements
  • It is the right thing to do!
