Statistics Continued
  • Fatal falls from roofs increased

  • due primarily to higher numbers of fatal work
    injuries specifically finishing contractors and
    roofing contractors

4
Major Causes of Roofing Accidents
  • Pitch of the Roof
  • Moisture
  • Footwear Tripping Hazards

5
Pitch of the Roof
  • Pitch
  • slope and inclination angle of a roof
  • The steeper the pitch, the more difficult to
    maintain your footing

6
Moisture
  • Natural Elements may cause slippery conditions on
    the Roof, such as
  • Rain
  • Snow
  • Frost

7
Footwear

  • Always wear good traction shoes/boots
  • Good Housekeeping
  • Keep Roof Clean
  • Avoid Letting Objects Fall From Roof

8
Tripping Hazards
  • Keep Roof Clean with
  • Broom
  • Leaf Blower
  • Tripping Occurs from
  • Tools
  • Electric Cords
  • Equipment
  • Leaves
  • Debris
  • Trash
  • Sawdust

9
Considerations for Roof Work
  • Risk Assessment
  • Fall Protection
  • Plan
  • Training
  • Systems

10
Risk Assessment
  • Assign a competent person to inspect before work
begins to identify fall hazards and determine the
    appropriate fall prevention systems
  • Conduct scheduled and unscheduled inspections to
ensure that the fall prevention system selected
is used and maintained correctly and provides
    adequate protection against falls

11
Plan to Protect Workers
  • Provide printed documents showing the exact
    location of all skylights
  • Install permanent, suitable anchorage points and
    clearly mark their locations
  • Install permanent railings around skylights or
    protective screens over individual skylights
  • Post warning signs on skylights and at entries
(doors, stairs, ladders, or roof hatches) to
    areas containing skylights.

12
Training
  • Workers need
  • Knowledge
  • Skills
  • Experience
  • Training
  • Enable each worker to recognize fall hazards
  • Understand procedures to follow for minimizing
    these hazards
  • Training provided by a person qualified through
    education and experience

13
Training Should Include
  • Identification and description of fall hazards in
    the work area
  • Correct procedures for erecting, inspecting,
    maintaining, using, and disassembling fall
    prevention systems
  • Defined roles for workers in fall prevention
    plans
  • Applicable OSHA regulations including, for
    example, requirements for standard guardrails,
covers or screens to prevent falls

14
Fall Protection Systems
  • Required if a worker may fall from an elevated
    position
  • There are a number of ways to protect workers
    from falls
  • guardrail systems
  • safety net systems
  • personal fall protection systems
  • (if height is greater than 6)
  • fall arrest systems
  • positioning systems
  • travel restraint systems warning lines

15
Personal Fall Protection Systems
  • Anchor
  • Fall Protection Bucket
  • Roofing Kit with
  • Anchor
  • Lanyard
  • Harness
  • Roof Bracket

16
Other Forms of Protection
  • The Following Should be Provided
  • Warning Lines
  • Designated Areas
  • Control Zones
  • Limiting Number of Workers
  • Safe Work Methods and Procedures

17
Safe Roofing Practices
  • Keep your center of gravity low and over your
    feet
  • Keep your knees bent and be aware of your
    surroundings
  • Dont carry too much or have your hands too full
