KIAP
  • A linguistic and contrastive study of the genre
    research article
  • Languages English, French, and Norwegian
  • Fields economics, linguistics, and medicine
  • Electronic corpus 450 articles

4
Key issue
  • Can cultural identities be identified in
academic prose, and, if so, are these identities
    language- or discipline-specific in nature?

5
Supplementary goal
  • Identify features that can be used in
    automatic summarization program for argumentative
    research articles.

6
Main research questions
  • - How does the article writer manifest
    him-/herself in the text?
  • - How are other researchers work and voices
    reflected in the article?
  • - How are the author's attitudes expressed,
through the presentation and promotion of his or
her own research (epistemic axis and evaluative
    axis)?

14
Main hypothesis
  • The cultural identity of academic writers is
    primarily discipline-specific (more so than
    language-specific).

15
Results of pilot phase
  • Medical researchers are non-polemic and
non-expressive writers who do not let other
researchers be heard in their texts, economists
are rather shy writers who avoid promoting
    themselves,
  • and linguists are polemic writers who involve
several other researchers in the text, often to
    refute their points of view.
  • (Breivega, Dahl Fløttum 2002).

16
The medical researcher? The economist?
The linguist ?
17
Results of explorative phase (1)
  • The discipline dimension still seems to be the
    most important
  • - explicit and expressive linguists
  • - explicit economists
  • - non-explicit and non-expressive medical
    researchers

18
Results of explorative phase (2a)
  • The national or language dimension should not
    be neglected
  • - English I-users (singular)
  • - French on-users (indefinite)
  • - Norwegian vi-users (plural)

19
Results of explorative phase (2b)
  • Metadiscourse
  • English and Norwegian writers use it more than
    French writers.
  • Bibliographical references
  • English writers refer more than Norwegian
writers and Norwegian more than French.

20
Results of qualitative phase
  • The conception of scientific discourse as
deprived of subjective traces is a myth
  • Further studies to be done
  • - Norwegian jeg/vi (I/we) perspective
  • - French on (indefinite)
  • - Polyphony
  • - Person presence
  • - Epistemic expressions
  • - Metadiscourse reader orientation
  • - Lexical choice
