  • Enhancing international communication in the
    service of global cancer control

What is a Web Portal?
  • A portal, as its name implies, is a single point
    of access to a set of linked applications that
    are of interest to various types of users
  • The consistent look and feel with regard to
    access to information or the use of the linked
    applications provides significant advantages to
    communication and collaboration

How does it differ from a Web Site?
  • A portal is much more interactive, permitting
    users to modify content, and even the appearance
    of web pages
  • Users given appropriate rights can even create
    new electronic work spaces (sites) for a group,
    document or meeting
  • Available applications include surveys,
    discussion groups, e-mail alerts when a document
    or library is modified, etc.

The INCTR Portal
  • The INCTR portal is constructed with Microsoft
    Share Point Portal Software
  • The provider is Capital Technologies Information
    Services http//www.ctisinc.com/
  • It consists of a hierarchical complex of web
    sites the Portal Home Page is reached via
    INCTRs web site
  • http//www.inctr.org/

What is its value?
  • The portal will provide information and permit
    sharing of a broad range of files and
    applications
  • Through improve communication and storage of past
    and present files at a single location, it will
    improve the management of projects and events of
    all kinds
  • While much of the portal will be accessible to
    anybody able to access the internet, some sites
    will be working sites for INCTR staff or groups

INCTR Portal Home Page
  • The home page provides a series of options listed
    on the Quick Launch bar at the left of the
    screen

Click on one to move to a picture or document
library, or to one of the subordinate sites
listed, e.g., INCTR Programs

Statistics
  • Some statistics relevant to developing countries
    are revealed by scrolling down and selecting the
    required information at the pull down bar.

Some Useful Locations
  • You can click on any item in black on the Quick
    Launch bar to move to the site in question e.g.
    Education, Palliative Care, Forum, etc.

The Education Site
  • Here you can access presentations from past INCTR
    Annual Meetings and also presentations on
    selected topics (e.g., imaging in various cancers

The Palliative Care Site
  • Here you can access INCTRs Clinical Guidelines
    for Palliative Care and provide comments on them
    via the survey

Members Forum
  • The Forum site is an interactive site, the
    content of which is both contributed by and
    available to INCTR members
  • This site also includes a list of all members,
    that is periodically updated, and the potential
    to perform surveys or have group discussions

  • Note that on each site, you can return to the
    Portal Home Page by clicking on Up to INCTR Home

  • Announcements on the home page are visible under
    the description, and many external internet sites
    are included on the right side of the page just
    click and go!

  • You can move to the home page of an INCTR Branch
    or Office simply by clicking on its global
    location on the map

  • There is also a common website for all branches,
    available via the list of links, from which the
    individual branch websites can also be accessed.

  • Each of the branch sites provides similar
    information to that on the portal home page, but
    is specific to the particular branch

INCTR Staff Sites
  • Some areas of the Portal are accessible only to
    INCTR staff and Associate Members throughout the
    world
  • In such cases, a password is required to access
    the sites
  • Passwords will be provided by INCTR Headquarters
    in Belgium

Communications among INCTR Collaborators
  • In addition to the public and staff sites are
    workspaces for specific INCTR groups e.g.,
    Governing Council, Special Panel, Strategy Groups
  • Others are workspaces for work groups whose
    members are located in different countries e.g.,
    NETWORK, Annual Meeting
  • These sites are also password protected

Entering a Password Protected Site
  • If you attempt to enter a password protected site
    or workspace, you will be asked for your username
    and password.
  • If you are not allowed entry but no request for a
    password is made, check that your computer will
    ALLOW POPUPS for this site

Entering Your Username and Password
Enter the domain name (W2K3-PORTALS)\username in
the top row. Enter your password in the second
row. Choose remember password if you wish, and
click OK

How to Download Files
  • Text or graphic files are stored in document
    libraries and accessed via the quick launch bar
    or from a web part displayed on the relevant
    home page

Document Libraries
  • The screen obtained from either clicking on the
    Quick Launch bar or on the title of a document
    library displayed on the page looks like this

Accessing a Folder in a Library
  • This screen shows the list of PowerPoint
    presentations displayed when the PowerPoint
    folder within the previous library is opened.

Accessing Document Files
  • A document file is best opened or saved by a
    right click and choosing from the menu which
    appears

Right click on document of choice
A left click permits you to download the file
into your computer (password needed)

How to Download Documents for Editing
  • Documents for editing and returning to its
    original location, or new documents, created
    online or uploaded, will only be accessible by
    members with password access to the relevant
    site.
  • Even if you download and save a document from a
    public site, you will not be able to reload an
    edited version

Downloading Files for Editing
  • To edit a file, it must be accessed from the
    library screen by clicking on the arrow to the
    right of a file and choosing from the menu

e.g., Edit in Microsoft Word

Uploading Documents
  • Documents may be uploaded to a library via the
    upload document choice in the horizontal menu
    bar in a document library

Setting E-Mail Alerts
  • You can arrange for an e-mail to be sent to you
    each time a specific document is changed, or each
    time a change is made to a document library.

Click on menu item for alerts relating to a
specific document
Click on Alert me and follow instructions for
alerts to changes in the entire library
