• Ethnicity (Maori, Pakeha, Pacific)
• Urban/rural (Wellington Taranaki)
• Age (10 12 14)
• Gender
• Ethnicity main organising factor.

• Pakeha Older rural, younger urban
• Pacific Urban girls, urban boys
• Maori Younger rural, older urban
• Further focus group interviews planned with
• Young people with disabilities
• Young people in alternative community/educati
  onal settings

Facilitators

• Comprise researchers from three centres (RMCSF,
  HSRC, NZCER)
• Separate (and related) question development,
  facilitation and analysis according to ethnicity
  (Maori, Pacific, Pakeha)
• Also facilitated youth advisory groups

• Knowing when someone is doing well
• People and places young people feel connected to
• How others make young people feel connected
• Feeling alone and not connected
• The importance of technology

Progress

• Pakeha and Pacific focus groups conducted
• Maori focus groups planned early November
• Some analysis of Pakeha and Pacific transcripts
  begun, indicating emerging themes
• Need to set up more focus groups to gather data
  on those not already represented
