Title: Aloha Demonstration Module

1
Aloha Demonstration Module
  • Cabled Observatory Presentation
  • School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology
  • October 2006

2
Purposes
  • To demonstrate the feasibility of SL280 and SL560
    cable reuse.
  • To fully test the data transport with Format and
    Bit Rate Independent streams.
  • To collect useful hydrophone and pressure gauge
    (Tsunami Gauge) data.
  • To promote interest in ocean bottom data.

3
SL Cable Data Channel
  • SL280 and SL560 cables use PDH1 data format
  • VERY complex format and structure
  • VERY dynamic routing
  • Complex supervisory overhead
  • MOST of this is not needed for observatories.
  • 1 Plesiochronous Data Hierarchy

4
Using Existing Format
  • Need to add a Dummy Mini-TTE so that Makaha
thinks it is talking to California
  • Need Frame Relay to get Ethernet into Phone
    System Format.
  • Most existing COTS equipment is power-hungry and
not meant to fit into pressure case.
  • Again, most functions are not needed.

5
Its free? Why not use it??
  • Power Drain.
  • Complexity.
  • Reliability.
  • Development Time.
  • Cost.
  • Space constraints.

6
Reducible Complexity
7
Development of Proof Module
  • Uses Wideband Hydrophone from HUGO SEM
  • Long period to 100 seconds
  • DigiQuartz pressure / Tsunami gauge
  • 24-bit stereo A/D Converter at 96 ksps.
  • Simple Rabbit 3000 controller.

8
Integration with Muldex
  • The Proof Module provides real-time experience
with encoding signals with the Tremblay Data
    Transport Muldex.
  • PCB layout of Muldex and testing of circuit.
  • Second-generation Muldex
  • Clock divider for SL560 supervisory functions
  • Improved Muldex PCB layout.

9
Development of Data Channel
  • Installation of TTE gear at Makaha ahead of Aloha
    Observatory deployment.
  • Installation and testing of data link from Makaha
    to UH.
  • Development of first round data distribution
  • Webcast audio
  • Downloadable data files

10
Installation of Makaha PFE
  • Power Feed Equipment will operate at lower power
    during first phase.
  • It will be thoroughly burned-in and tested by the
time the Aloha Observatory is deployed.

11
Conclusions
  • The Proof Module phase
  • Tests the Muldex Data Transport
  • Tests the SL280 cable
  • Tests the Makaha PFE
  • Tests the Makaha UH data channel
  • Tests the data file distribution
  • Provides months of valuable scientific data

12
conclusions
  • The Proof Module splits the deployment of the
Aloha Observatory into two manageable projects.
  • The entire shore installation and the wet plant
will be tested and ready when we deploy the
    Observatory
