Ashcroft High School
  • Eco Schools
  • Adam, Kori and Alex

2
What we have done so far
  • We have an eco committee.
  • Meet monthly.
  • We carried out a full environmental review.
  • We have put an action plan together.

3
Energy
  • School is registered with Sustainable Learning.
  • We encourage everyone to turn lights and
    electrical equipment off.
  • Also, pupils take and display readings from
    meters in Maths lessons.

The Litter Policy
  • 10p deposit is charged when students purchase
    bottled or canned drinks.
  • Students are requested to remove wrappers from
food and put in bins before going outside.
  • Tutor groups take part in litter picking on a
    rota.

8
The Litter Policy
  • Students are educated on preventing litter
through Science, PSHCEE lessons and assemblies.
    These are often student led.
  • We hand out Community Service Awards at the end
    of each term

9
Recycling
  • We are involved with the Recycle for Learning
    Scheme.
  • Trips to paper mill to be organised for students.
  • Bag2School - reduces the amount of textiles going
    to landfill.
  • Asda Go Green For Schools encourages
recycling of plastic carrier bags and use of bags
    for life.

10
Recycle for learning
  • Scheme that diverts 10,000 tonnes annually of
    paper waste from landfill.
  • They collect waste paper from schools,
reprocessing it to produce 100 recycled paper
  • Then returned to the schools, creating a closed
    loop project.

11
  • The whole school is involved.
  • Everyone is encouraged to use both sides of paper
    before recycling.
  • Every class has a recycling box.
  • Arranging for Recycle to Learn to come into
    assemblies.

12
Waste Minimisation / Recycling
  • We are educating the whole school about waste and
    recycling.
  • Here are some recent Recycling Facts

13
  • In one hour we produce enough waste in the UK to
    fill the Albert Hall.

14
  • In one day there would be enough waste to fill
Trafalgar Square to the top of Nelsons Column.

15
  • In one year there would be enough waste to fill
dustbins stretching from the Earth to the Moon.

16
  • Every year 13 billion steel cans are produced and
up to a quarter of every new steel can is made
from recycled steel. This is the equivalent of
over 3 billion cans made from recycled steel.

17
  • About 34,000 tonnes of aluminium foil packaging
(worth around 12 million) is wasted each year.
Only 3,000 tonnes is recycled (worth 1.2
    million).

18
  • If all the aluminium cans sold in the UK were
recycled there would be 12 million fewer full
    dustbins each year.

19
  • Each tonne of paper recycled saves 15
average-sized trees, as well as their surrounding
    habitat and wildlife.

20
  • A milk bottle is reused an average of 20 times
    before it is recycled.

21
  • Every tonne of glass recycled saves over 1 tonne
of raw materials like sand and limestone. This
means less quarrying, less damage to our
    countryside, less pollution, valuable energy
    saving and less global warming.

22
  • In 1995, 6.7 billion aluminium cans were used in
the UK. If recycled they would be worth around
65 million. Only 28 of these cans were
recycled, which means that 4.8 billion cans were
land filled with a value of approximately 47
    million.

23
Cash for Cans
  • School actively encourages students to recycle
    aluminium cans and foil.
  • This process is less energy-consuming than making
the metal for the first time.

24
Bag2School
25
Healthy Eating
  • School monitors whether students eat a balanced
    lunchtime diet.
  • Water is available throughout the day for students

26
Healthy Eating
  • Healthy eating is encouraged throughout the
    curriculum.
  • School rented dance mats for students to try.
  • Dance mats encouraged students to keep active and
    fit.

27
Domestic Waste
  • Students are educated about domestic waste across
    the curriculum.
  • Students encouraged to consider the environmental
    problems caused by waste.

28
Pupil Participation
  • Students deliver assemblies and PSHCEE lessons on
    eco topics
  • Students have developed an Ashcroft Eco Code
  • Students assist in writing the development plan.

29
Recap - Pupil Participation
  • Students take part in local / national
    conferences and competitions
  • Students complete exchange sheets with schools in
    other countries
  • Students participate in community service
  • Students take the lead in organising Bag2School ,
Cash for Cans and Recycle for Learning

30
Eco Competition Winners
  • The School regularly holds competitions.
  • These raise the awareness about litter within the
    school.
  • The school itself won an eco competition for
    building a recycling model.
  • School also won a Key Stage 3 award for creating
    an environmental game.

31
Biodiversity
  • CD Bell Plant Project
  • More plants, pots and beds in school.
  • School encourages staff to have plants into
    classrooms.

32
Teaching and Learning
  • School is increasing number of lessons held
    outside.
  • Pupils are going to look into the schools
    heritage.
  • School is involved with the Science Across the
    World Exchange Project.

33
Teaching and Learning
  • DEFRA has worked with Year 11 students research
projects on composting food waste and nuclear
    waste.
  • We are now looking at eco-topics from a global
    perspective.
  • We are also registered with Generation Green

Thank you for listening to our presentation We
hope you enjoy your journey to becoming an eco
friendly school
