  • Often use committee type admission process
  • Many campuses use the Common Application
  • -One application used by over 350 colleges and
    universities.
  • They accept this application in
place of their own and you can apply to
  • several colleges using this one
    application.
  • -If the college uses the Common App, an essay
    is required as well
  • as letters of recommendation from a
    counselor and/or teachers.
  • For a list of schools that participate in the
    Common App go to www.commonapp.org

9
Committee Selection Vs. Eligibility Index
  • Committee Selection
  • Student applicants are reviewed in the context of
    their entire application. Extracurricular
    activities, leadership opportunities and
community service play a significant role.
  • Eligibility Index
  • Campuses use a mathematical equation to determine
eligibility, primarily based on GPA and test
scores. Index will vary by campus

10
How Do I Decide Where to Apply?
  • Consider all factors Location, size, majors,
cost, admissions, student lifeyou are looking
for the right fit for YOU.
  • Pay attention to admissions criteria, acceptance
rates, and admissions trends. If you have ANY
questions, your best source is THE COLLEGE.
  • Application fees range anywhere from 45-90.
Applying to a large number of schools can be
    expensive.
  • Applications involve a lot of time and effort.
There are many steps and each item must be done
carefully. Quality is better than quantity when
    it comes to college applications.
  • Speak to your counselor. We are familiar with
your academic history and are happy to review

    colleges
  • Safety Schools - schools whose admissions
    requirements you well exceed
  • Match Schools- schools whose admissions
    requirements you meet
  • Reach Schools- schools whose admissions
requirements are historically very competitive or
difficult to get into, regardless of whether the
student has exceeded admissions requirements (low
    admissions rates)
  • Read this Match, Reach, and Safety schools

College Application Tips and Advice
  • Create a new email account specifically for
    college applications
  • -Make sure the email address is
    PROFESSIONAL
  • -Create folders in your inbox for each
    college (to be organized)
  • -Save everything!
  • Write down all of your college application
usernames and passwords, and keep them in a safe,
    accessible place.
  • Give your teachers/counselor adequate time to
complete a thorough letter of recommendation for
you. The earlier the better! Keep in mind that
some teachers limit the number of letters they
will write and it is first come, first served.
  • Start thinking about your essays now.
  • Make sure you save your drafts in multiple places
    (back up your work).
  • Have adults proofread and give you feedback on
    your essays.
  • Don't forget about the Supplements! (for some
    Common App schools)

15
Do colleges really care about your senior
grades?
  • Absolutely! Many colleges will not make a
decision until receiving first semester grades.
They expect to see performance that indicates you
    are ready for college-level work.
  • It is not unusual for a college to withdraw an
offer of admission when grades drop significantly
over the course of the senior year.
