Requirements
- Fulfill the minimum A - G course requirements
- Submit the ACT or SAT Reasoning
- (CSU does not require the score from the Writing
section of the SAT or ACT. They only use the
Math and Critical Reading sections for admissions
purposes.) - Admissions is determined by eligibility index
SAT (CR M) (800 x GPA) 2900 or above
(10 x composite ACT score) (200 x GPA) 694
or above
10-12 GPA in A-G courses

Requirements
- Fulfill the minimum A-G subject requirements
- Submit the SAT Reasoning or ACT with Writing
- Submit TWO SAT Subject tests in different subject
area - (NOTE Language with Listening is used for
placement purposes and language validation, so be
sure to check with the college directly.) - Visit https//doorways.ucop.edu/list/ for a
complete list of CCA UC-approved courses - Admission is determined by eligibility index AND
Comprehensive Review (GPA, test scores, personal
essay, extra-curricular activities, etc)

7UC/CSU Testing Requirement
- Available Test Dates for the remainder of 11th
grade school year - SAT Subject exams
- Saturday, May 2, 2009 (reg. deadline passed,
stand-by only) - Saturday, June 6, 2009 (reg. deadline is May
5, 2009) - ACT
- Saturday, June 13, 2009 (reg. deadline is May
8, 2009) - Register at www.collegeboard.com for the SAT and
www.act.org for the ACT - www.fairtest.org A resource with a list of
colleges and universities that do not require the
ACT or SAT for admissions.
8Private/Out-of-State UniversitiesAdmissions
Requirements
- Students should check with each college
individually as requirements vary by institution - Often use committee type admission process
- Many campuses use the Common Application
- -One application used by over 350 colleges and
universities. - They accept this application in
place of their own and you can apply to - several colleges using this one
application. - -If the college uses the Common App, an essay
is required as well - as letters of recommendation from a
counselor and/or teachers. - For a list of schools that participate in the
Common App go to www.commonapp.org
9Committee Selection Vs. Eligibility Index
- Committee Selection
- Student applicants are reviewed in the context of
their entire application. Extracurricular
activities, leadership opportunities and
community service play a significant role. - Eligibility Index
- Campuses use a mathematical equation to determine
eligibility, primarily based on GPA and test
scores. Index will vary by campus
10How Do I Decide Where to Apply?
- Consider all factors Location, size, majors,
cost, admissions, student lifeyou are looking
for the right fit for YOU. - Pay attention to admissions criteria, acceptance
rates, and admissions trends. If you have ANY
questions, your best source is THE COLLEGE. - Application fees range anywhere from 45-90.
Applying to a large number of schools can be
expensive. - Applications involve a lot of time and effort.
There are many steps and each item must be done
carefully. Quality is better than quantity when
it comes to college applications. - Speak to your counselor. We are familiar with
your academic history and are happy to review
your College List with you.

12Where Should I Start?
- Create a College List in NAVIANCE under Colleges
That Im Considering - Your College List should include a range of
colleges - Safety Schools - schools whose admissions
requirements you well exceed - Match Schools- schools whose admissions
requirements you meet - Reach Schools- schools whose admissions
requirements are historically very competitive or
difficult to get into, regardless of whether the
student has exceeded admissions requirements (low
admissions rates) - Read this Match, Reach, and Safety schools
13Letters of Recommendation
- Letters of recommendation may be required for
- Private universities
- Out-of-state colleges
- Scholarships
- Special programs or majors
- Letters of recommendation are not
required/accepted for UC/CSU. - BRAG PACKET in Naviance
- Assists teacher/counselor with writing letters
of recommendations - Short answers
- Parent input
- Peer response
- A chance for you to BRAG about all youve
accomplished in high school and give your
teacher/counselor more insight into who you are
as a person. -
14College Application Tips and Advice
- Create a new email account specifically for
college applications - -Make sure the email address is
PROFESSIONAL - -Create folders in your inbox for each
college (to be organized) - -Save everything!
- Write down all of your college application
usernames and passwords, and keep them in a safe,
accessible place. - Give your teachers/counselor adequate time to
complete a thorough letter of recommendation for
you. The earlier the better! Keep in mind that
some teachers limit the number of letters they
will write and it is first come, first served. - Start thinking about your essays now.
- Make sure you save your drafts in multiple places
(back up your work). - Have adults proofread and give you feedback on
your essays. - Don't forget about the Supplements! (for some
Common App schools)
15Do colleges really care about your senior
grades?
- Absolutely! Many colleges will not make a
decision until receiving first semester grades.
They expect to see performance that indicates you
are ready for college-level work. - It is not unusual for a college to withdraw an
offer of admission when grades drop significantly
over the course of the senior year.
16College Bound Athlete?NCAA Clearinghouse
- Students who intend to play a sport in college
are required to register with the NCAA
Clearinghouse at the end of 11th grade. Please
check with your counselor to make sure that you
have met the NCAA core-course rule. - Please visit www.ncaaclearinghouse.net to
register. -
17Summer BEFORE Senior Year
- Summer School to remediate any D/F grades
- -Applications available in the Counseling
Office - Take courses at a local community college
- Seek employment or an internship
- Enroll in a summer program (hundreds nationwide)
- Visit colleges
- Please refer to the Counseling website or
visit the College Career Center in the
Counseling Office for more information.
