1
The Acts of the Apostles
  • Acts 826-40
  • A Funny Thing Happened
  • on the Road to Gaza

2
  • Acts 826-40
  • 26 But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip
saying, "Get up and go south to the road that
descends from Jerusalem to Gaza." (This is a
    desert road.)
  • 27 So he got up and went and there was an
Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace,
queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all
her treasure and he had come to Jerusalem to
    worship,
  • 28 and he was returning and sitting in his
chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.

3
  • 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and
join this chariot." 30 Philip ran up and heard
him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, "Do you
    understand what you are reading?"
  • 31 And he said, "Well, how could I, unless
someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come
    up and sit with him.

4
  • 32 Now the passage of Scripture which he was
    reading was this
  • "HE WAS LED AS A SHEEP TO SLAUGHTER
  • AND AS A LAMB BEFORE ITS SHEARER IS SILENT,
  • SO HE DOES NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH.
  • 33 "IN HUMILIATION HIS JUDGMENT WAS TAKEN AWAY
    WHO WILL RELATE HIS GENERATION?
  • FOR HIS LIFE IS REMOVED FROM THE EARTH."

5
  • 34 The eunuch answered Philip and said, "Please
tell me, of whom does the prophet say this? Of
    himself or of someone else?"
  • 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning
from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him.
  • 36 As they went along the road they came to some
water and the eunuch said, "Look! Water! What
    prevents me from being baptized?"
  • 37And Philip said, "If you believe with all your
heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I
believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."

6
  • 38 And he ordered the chariot to stop and they
both went down into the water, Philip as well as
the eunuch, and he baptized him.
  • 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit
of the Lord snatched Philip away and the eunuch
no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing.
  • 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he
passed through he kept preaching the gospel to
all the cities until he came to Caesarea.

7
On the Road to Gaza
  • Phillip leaves Samaria and heads south
  • The eunuch is not Jewish by birth but a proselyte
    to Judaism
  • Phillip may have been frustrated that God took
him from a fruitful ministry to the desert
  • Phillip receives the calling of God
  • Phillip was obedient to the calling of God

8
Meeting the Eunuch
  • Acts 827 There was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court
official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who
was in charge of all her treasure and he had
    come to Jerusalem to worship.
  • God had been preparing the heart of this man
  • This whole encounter was lead by the Spirit
  • Romans 1017 So then faith comes by hearing, and
hearing by the word of God.

9
The Text from Isaiah
  • The eunuch is reading from Isaiah 53
  • Acts 832-33 Now the passage of Scripture which
he was reading was this "HE WAS LED AS A SHEEP
TO SLAUGHTER AND AS A LAMB BEFORE ITS SHEARER IS
SILENT, SO HE DOES NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH. "IN
HUMILIATION HIS JUDGMENT WAS TAKEN AWAY WHO WILL
RELATE HIS GENERATION? FOR HIS LIFE IS REMOVED
    FROM THE EARTH."

10
The Baptism of the Eunuch
  • Acts 836 As they went along the road they came
to some water and the eunuch said, "Look! Water!
What prevents me from being baptized?"
  • Baptism is the act of a proselyte to Judaism
  • The eunuch saw that Jesus had everything to do
with his being cleansed of his sins

11
The Problem Verse 37
  • Acts 837 And Philip said, "If you believe with
all your heart, you may." And he answered and
said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of
    God."
  • If you take out verse 37, it becomes very hard to
say Jesus Christ is the Son of God is a condition
    of baptism.
  • Verse 37 is cited by church fathers, is included
in the Latin Vulgate, and confirmed by other 4th
    and 5th century church leaders

12
Points for Application
  • God prepares peoples hearts to receive Jesus as
    Lord and Savior
  • Are we talking about Jesus or the programs and
    things that bless us?
  • Baptism
  • Romans 108-9 The word of faith we are
proclaiming That if you confess with your mouth,
"Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that
God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

13
I Believe In Jesus
  • I believe in Jesus,
  • I believe He is the Son of God,
  • I believe He died and rose again,
  • I believe He paid for us all.
  • .

14
  • And I believe that Hes here now,
  • (I believe that Hes here)
  • standing in our midst.
  • Here with the power to heal now
  • (With the power to heal)

15
  • I believe in You, Lord,
  • I believe You are the Son of God,
  • I believe You died and rose again,
  • I believe You paid for us all.
  • And I believe that Youre here now,
  • (I believe that Youre here)
  • standing in our midst.
  • Here with the power to heal now,
  • (With the power to heal)
