Railways in cooperation with railway authorities
and notified bodies
?
GSM-R test and validation of system and
application
  • Railway network operator have to ensure safe
    train traffic
  • Therefore, railways verify functionality and
quality of the GSM-R system and the application
(such as train radio, shunting radio, maintenance
    radio, etc.)
  • National railway authorities verifying
    functionality of selected systems and
    applications in railway operation (including
    telecommunication)
  • National associations (notified bodies) have been
    assigned to certify conformance of
    telecommunication products to international
standards (such as the interoperability rules of
    EIRENE)
  • Test houses and engineering companies are
qualified to measure and test products,
    procedures, and applications for homologation
  • National procedures are still applicable in
parallel to European standards and regulations

  • 1.35 out of limit (21 cells)
  • Drop rate TCH 0.42 (traffic)
  • Drop rate SDCCH 1.06 (signalling)

Change request activities in the GSM-R Project
The GSM-R Project together with the constituent
groups (FG, OG, IG )has a major activity which
is the maintenance of EIRENE Functional and
System Specifications.
The Change Request activity is well organised,
which aims to maintain the GSM-R specifications,
in the interest of interoperability, taking into
account the implementation progress and the
advance of the technologies.
Change requests are generated by
Implementation Reports

Change Information by industry or
created
by CER /EIM CR information
24
Implementation Reports
  • These reports cover issues from implementation of
    GSM-R
  • and are requests for additional information or
    clarification Implementation Reports
  • Can lead a Change Request to the FRS.
  • Can be only a clarification
  • Examples of Implementation reports discussed in
    the project
  • Call arbitration table
  • Increased number of drivers / members in shunting
    group calls
  • Alerting Controller
  • Direct Mode implementation
  • Communication between the dispatcher and all Cab
    radios in
  • the area
  • Driver Safety Device Alarm Notification

27
GSM-R only an introduction of a new Communication
system?
Harmonisation of operational rules
Example
Emergency Call
No
harmonisation took place since many years. Due to
introduction of a new technology urgent
activities are needed Action by railways

Harmonisation of operational Railway processes
Example DSD
(driver supervision device) with retry mechanism.
If such a change request will be
accepted, it will influence the status of the
GSM-R status. Then we have to prove a
safety-case, the definition of the SIL level and
a lot of other circumstances. Action by ERA as
system-authority
28
Other items to be discussed urgently
  • ( some examples)
  • Freezing the system specification
  • To check more consequently the change request at
    the beginning
  • Is ERTMS only a system for the big railways in
Europe? There is a need of a cheaper system for
    the countries in eastern Europe.
  • To push ERTMS regional
  • Do we really need the high level coverage (there
    are no HSL)?

  • Future activities
  • Additional bandwidth for GSM-R
  • Introduction of GPRS
  • Stabilisation of shunting procedures
  • Introduction of additional application
  • Improvement of QoS figures
  • Konfiguration management / Cross acceptance
