  • -- Layout possible paths to the jobs you
    want to hold. Include requirements, experience,
    and milestones.
  • -- Be Flexible and have Alternatives
  • -- Remember Needs of the Service
  • -- Focus on positions/jobs, not rank
  • -- Perform and let the rank come

  • Be very observant of your superiors as
    leadersthe good and the not so good!!
  • This applies to leaders you can observe in other
    career areas, e.g. community, business, medical,
    education.

  • Keep a Personal Journal!!
  • Review your journal frequently as new thoughts
    and ideas will emerge over time.

  • Read, Read, and then Read some more!!
  • Key Newspapers, magazines, Biographies, History,
    Futurist, Business, and yes, Fiction!!
  • Do Not just read to agree---read to learn and
    develop your own leadership voice.

  • Perform each position as if it is the last
    position you will ever hold.
  • Done correctly this avoids the grass is greener
    issue and loss of focus.
  • You still need to do career planning so do not
    carry this to an extreme!

    seminar!
  • If you are picked to go take full advantage of
    the networking and learning opportunities.
  • Volunteer to attend other services schools or
    joint service schools
  • Look at DSMC and ICAF

  • Not from a Diploma Mill
  • PhD---depends. There are not very many slots for
    PhD.
