1
Advisory Overview
  • Week 1 August 12th, 2008

2
Overview of Advisory
  • The primary goal of the WUHS Advisory Program is
to help ALL students to be successful in high
    school.
  • The Three Components of Advisory are
  • Promoting WIN (What is Now / What is Next)
  • Communication (Speaking AND Listening)
  • Mentoring (Helping Students in Need)

3
Promoting WIN
  • WIN stands for
  • What is Now? AND What is Next?
  • WIN reminds ALL students to connect the
importance of what they do TODAY in preparation
    for their FUTURE.
  • WIN also challenges ALL students to prepare for
and pursue education beyond high school in order
to be competitive in todays job market.

4
Communication
  • Communication is an important skill necessary to
better understand what is happening today,
    tomorrow, next week...
  • Communication includes
  • LISTENING to what is being explained
  • SPEAKING to voice your opinion, concern, or to
    ask questions
  • BOTH are necessary to dialogue issues related to
    your education

5
Mentoring
  • Mentoring is the relationship that forms between
someone who knows more (from education,
experience, etc) and some who wants to learn
    more.
  • Some students lack relationships that care about
    their success in school.
  • If you need this kind of relationship, consider
your Advisory Teacher as a possible Mentor

6
When is Advisory?
  • Advisory meets each week on Tuesday (Block
Schedule) immediately AFTER First Period and
    right BEFORE Nutrition Break.
  • It is either 29 minutes or 55 minutes in length
    (depending on what is scheduled).
  • Some Advisory Periods will actually be set
    aside for Activities (Rallies, Assemblies,
    etc...)

7
Why Should I Go?
  • Advisory is treated like any other class (steps,
referrals, tardies, cuts, class rules, and the
W-Book all apply in the same way).
  • Advisory will receive Credit / No Credit
    according to the Advisory Teacher.
  • 4 Years of Advisory Credit will be required to
    participate in the Graduation Ceremony.
  • Credit may be recovered over the summer by
completing 40 hours of community service

8
Why Should I Go?
  • More importantly, Advisory should be FUN!
  • Advisory should include
  • Advisory Class Competitions
  • A place to connect with 25 other students and
your Advisor for the rest of your time in high
    school
  • A supportive environment to discuss upcoming
events and important issues relevant to school
    and life
  • A supportive environment that promotes how to be
successful in high school and the future

10
The W-Book
  • The following slides are an overview of the
W-Book. In it, you will find some simple rules
to follow that will help you succeed in high
    school.

11
How to be Successful
  • To be successful at a job, a sport, a
    relationship, or an education requires
    commitment.
  • It means you need to BE THERE...EVERY DAY, ALL
    DAY, and ON TIME.

12
Attendance is a MUST!
  • Good attendance at school is
  • Required by law!
  • A vital first step to a successful future
  • IF you are absent
  • Your parent has up to 72 hours to excuse your
absence by a phone call or written note.
  • After 72 hours, you are considered TRUANT and
Saturday School is assigned to make up the time.
  • After three truancies, the State of California
identifies you as an habitual truant and your
parents are in violation of Penal Code 272! Then
the Courts get involvedthings dont look very
    successful.

13
Attendance is a MUST!
  • So make the commitment
  • Be in school every day, all day.
  • But what happens if you are not on time?

14
But What If Im TARDY? (turn to page 20).
  • Students who arrive to class late (AFTER the
tardy bell has rung) will be given a Detention by
    the classroom teacher.
  • Detentions are for 30 minutes and may ONLY be
served the day of receiving the detention OR the
following morning. Students failing to serve
their detention will be assigned a Step in that
    class.

15
But What If Im TARDY? (turn to page 20).
  • For EACH class per semester
  • Once a student has served a maximum of three (3)
Detentions for being Tardy, ALL subsequent
Tardies in that class will result in a Step. That
means students may be assigned a Step every time
    after the 3rd Tardy.
  • Students assigned Step Six may be dropped from
the class with a failed grade (F) and assigned to
ISR for that period for the remainder of the
    semester.

16
How NOT To Be Tardy
  • Get an ALARM CLOCK and use it..or listen to it
if your alarm is Mom saying, Get up.
  • Set your clock across the room, so you must get
out of bed to turn off the alarm. Dont go back
to bed! Keep heading to the bathroom or kitchen
    to start your day.
  • Have your backpack and things ready to go by the
    door.

17
How NOT To Be Tardy
  • Leave your home in time to catch the bus or walk
to school, arriving no later than 740 AM.
Remember 1st Period starts at 755 AM.
  • Go to your locker and get ready for your first
two classes. Do this before the bell rings to
give you time to get help if the locker wont
open or get to the Library for the, Oops, forgot
my bookand stop the, My locker is sooooo far
    away excuse. Be Responsible.
