Title: Ive got a river flowing out of me

1
Ive got a river flowing out of me!
  • Cathy Varland
  • Sheila Elliott
  • Marin Schy
  • Christine Ortega

2
Differentiate between the 3 classes of kidney
failure, matching each with the most likely cause
  • Pre-Renal
  • Intra Renal
  • Post Renal

Ureteral Stone Streptococcus pharyngitis Myocardia
l infarction
In terms of the process of urine formation,
explain the differences between the possible
causes of kidney failure.

Pre-renal
  • Heart attack can lead to loss of blood flow to
    the kidneys.
  • Poor blood flow means decreased glomerular
filtration and may lead to atrophy.

Myocardial Infarction!
6
Intra-renal
  • Bacterial infection of the kidneys occurs after
pharyngitis caused by the Streptococcus bacteria.
  • Glomerulonephritis results from infection.
  • Glomerular function is disrupted and correct
    filtration no longer occurs.

Streptococcus Pharyngitis!
7
Post-renal
  • A blockage in the ureter causes hydronephrosis
(fluid buildup in the renal pelvis and calices).
  • The pressure from this causes nephron damage and
    kidney failure.

Ureteral Stone!!!

Analogy The River
dam is Kidney turbines are Nephrons water is
Blood before dam water is Urine after dam
  • An energy producing dam is blocked by a fallen
tree up river (pre-renal). Now the dam is not
    producing energy
  • An angry environmentalist toys with the turbines
within the dam (intra-renal). The dam is unable
    to produce energy.
  • An earthquake causes a landslide blocking the
    river after the dam
  • (post-renal). This creates back pressure,
    damaging the dam.

9
  • Kidneys must be functioning for homeostasis.
