Title: Harnessing Awe Imagination is more important than knowledge

1
Harnessing AweImagination is more important
than knowledgeAlbert Einstein
  • Science is consistent with our natural-born
    curiosity and drive to explore.
  • NASA must shoulder a leadership role in preparing
    the next generation of explorers.
  • Delivers mesmerizing views that capture peoples
    imagination, wonder awe
  • Critically positioned to excite, inspire and
    drive tomorrows leaders
  • Can reach audiences in many ways, through
    networks and partnerships
  • NASA must be todays storyteller
  • Personalize the science scientists
  • Nurture questioning
  • Communicate sciences relevance

2
Harnessing Awe
  • Engaging learners establish personal stake,
    and why it matters
  • NASA doesn't need to provide more data needs to
provide more/better ways to engage learners.
  • Provide leadership in public engagement through
    partnerships with
  • Formal and informal educators
  • Public media groups
  • Federal and state agencies

3
Forming Inquiring MindsThe whole art of teaching
is only the art of awakening the natural
curiosity of young minds - Anatole France
  • Inquiry is key to science learning and teaching
  • What does inquiry mean?
  • What constitutes learning?
  • What teaching methods result in learning?
  • Interpretation of inquiry ranges from Totally
teacher controlled (closed ended) ? totally
    student controlled (open ended)
  • Who determines question, materials, procedure,
data collected, how data is organized and
interpreted, and how findings are communicated?
  • More by learner, the more the inquiry approaches
being open-ended and resembles inquiry done by
    scientists.

4
Forming Inquiring Minds
  • Misconceptions
  • Inquiry is synonymous with hands-on activity
  • Students must begin inquiring with teacher
    controlled closed-ended experiences and
    gradually work toward open-ended inquiry
  • What is learning?
  • Memorizing facts regurgitate them on a test?
  • Integration of thinking, feeling, and acting
which results in empowering the learner to
    construct meaning. (Novak, 1998)?
  • Science education reformers accept the latter
majority teach as if the former.
  • Culture of education system as a whole, high
    stakes, large scale testing, etc.

5
Forming Inquiring Minds
  • NASA needs to support systemic interventions (all
    levels, formal and informal)
  • Learning through inquiry is necessary for teacher
education (pre-service in-service), as well as
  • Professional scientists - Professors of science
    education
  • Graduate students who teach - Parents
  • Provide multiple opportunities for teachers to
    learn through full inquiry
  • Provide age appropriate resources for learning
    through inquiry.
  • Formal (K-20) and informal education.
  • Developed by researchers working with educators

6
Forging AlliancesThere is Strength in Numbers
  • Need strong alliances between industry,
    educational institutions, non-profits,
    government, and private sector
  • In a climate of funding cuts, when many feel that
science has lost its relevance to daily life.
  • In order to truly inspire the next generation of
    Earth explorers
  • Team up with groups that help bring NASAs
    mission to everyones hometown
  • Serving society finding out what actually
inspires people and showing them how science is a
great way to learn about Earth
  • Recommended strategy is twofold
  • Strengthen current relationships
  • Strategically develop new partnerships over the
    short and long-term.
