BACKGROUND
  • Inspired by the LAGUNET
  • Supported by the EC FP5 COLAR project
  • Steering meeting during the 2nd International
conference on coastal lagoons "European lagoons
and their watersheds function and biodiversity"
    in October 2005.

4
OBJECTIVES
  • To facilitate and strengthen cross-border
research, management and co-operation in Baltic
lagoons and to provide a forum for exchange and
    discussion
  • To represent the Baltic lagoon research community
in the broader international scope and to
co-operate with similar organizations in other
Eco-Regions of the European Union with the aim to
    strengthen European lagoon research.
  • To develop joint and cross-border projects
focused on Baltic lagoon research and to carry
out joint research on specific relevant topics,
like climate change, biodiversity etc. by hosting
    thematic focus groups.
  • To improve data and information availability
about Baltic lagoons and data exchange between
participants as well as to enhance the
    dissemination of scientific results
  • To support awareness-rising about ecological
problems and to support the sustainable
management in coastal lagoons by providing
    scientific results and accompanying research.
  • To support the implementation of European
policies in the Baltic area (e.g. Water Framework
    Directive, Natura 2000, ICZM-Recommendations
    etc.).

5
ROADMAP
  • Establishing contacts with other colleagues in
the Baltic region, and potentially interested
people as well as network organizations in the
Baltic area and other Eco-Regions of the European
    Union. (February 2006)
  • Opening the website. Supported by the steering
group the Coastal Research and Planning
    Institute, Klaipeda University agreed to
establish and host the Balloon website. (February
    2006)
  • Balloon representation on the DITTY project
meeting, Montpellier, February 22-24, to discuss
scientific lagoon projects with a European
dimension and a cooperation with respect to the
    forthcoming 7th FRAMEWORK programme.
  • National steering meetings (March-May 2006)
  • Preparation of the first Balloon meeting during
    the Eutrophication management conference, June
20-23, 2006, Nyborg, Denmark and support of a
    thematic session on coastal lagoons.

Ecosystem Modelling of Coastal Lagoons for
Sustainable Management NATO CCMS Study 1996-2006
  • The first phase of this pilot study, initiated in
1995, was finalized in December 2000. Turkey
acted as the pilot country and USA as co-pilot
    country. Canada, Italy, Poland, Portugal,
Romania, Russian Federation, Spain were the main
