Teaching Tennis
  • A Blueprint for Success

3
Why Should We Teach Tennis?
  • Obesity and fitness problems are growing rapidly
    in the United States
  • Physical Education class needs to address this
    problem by teaching lifetime activities
  • Tennis is a great lifetime activity

4
The Rules of the Game
  • To play tennis, students must learn the rules and
    scoring of the game
  • Tennis uses a game, set, match, scoring system
  • To win a tennis match, a player must win either
    2 of 3 or 3 of 5 sets

5
The Rules of the Game (cont.)
  • To win a Set, a player must win 6 games
  • To win a game, a player must win 4 points
  • The scoring for a game in which the server wins
    every point is as follows

6
The Rules of the Game (cont.)
  • When playing singles, everything in-between the
    doubles allies is In
  • When playing doubles, the entire court is
    considered In

7
The Rules of the Game (cont.)
  • When serving, the game always begins on the right
    (deuce) side of the court
  • Also, the server has two chances to land the ball
in the service box diagonal to him or her
  • If the server fails to land one of his two
attempt, then that person forfeits the point

8
Stroke Mechanics The Serve
  • The Serve is the most important shot in tennis
    because it starts the point
  • Begin serving by stepping up to the baseline with
feet shoulder-width apart and belly button
    pointed toward the right net-post

9
Stroke Mechanics The Serve
  • The racquet should swing back behind the back so
the racquet strings are flat against the back
  • The left arm should move up in unison with the
right arm in order to toss the ball
  • Leading with the edge, the racquet then swings up
to the ball and the wrist snaps down, bringing
    the ball into play

10
Stroke Mechanics - Forehand
  • The most common shot in tennis is the forehand
    ground stroke
  • The stroke begins with preparing for the shot by
rotating the body sideways and bending the knees
  • The racquet then comes straight back with the
face slightly closed to the ground

11
Stroke Mechanics - Forehand
  • The racquet then comes forward toward the ball,
making contact with the ball out in front of the
    body at approximately hip-level
  • As the racquet makes contact with the ball, the
wrist begins to slightly roll overtop of the
ball, creating topspin that will help keep the
    ball in play

12
Stroke Mechanics - Forehand
  • As the wrist rolls overtop of the tennis ball,
the racquet should follow-through overtop of the
    opposite shoulder
  • This follow-through will help ensure a low to
high swing necessary for creating topspin
  • After the stroke is complete, the player should
recover back to the middle of the court

13
Other Strokes
  • Other stroke to consider when teaching tennis are
  • The Backhand
  • The Volley
  • The Half-Volley
  • The Overhead
  • The Forehand Slice
  • The Backhand Slice

14
Tennis In Schools
  • When teaching tennis in a physical education
class room it is important to
  • Emphasize its importance as a lifetime activity
  • Not emphasize the importance of competition
  • Adapt tasks and drills to accommodate all skill
    levels of students
  • MAKE TENNIS FUN!
