1
Whats New in GEOPAK 8.8?
  • Robert Garrett, P.E.
  • Bentley Civil
  • Re-Presentation at Mid Continent Conference
    August 2006

2
What is GEOPAK 8.8?
  • GEOPAK 8.8 contains the majority of fixes and
enhancements that are in GEOPAK XM, but runs on
MicroStation 8.5.2.35. (as well as 8.5.2.55)
  • Note that GEOPAK 8.8 is considered a major
release and not a Service Pack.

3
Versions
  • 8.5.2.x -Also known as GEOPAK 2004. Runs on
    MicroStation 8.5.2.35.
  • 8.8.x.x -Contains XM enhancements and fixes but
also runs on MicroStation 8.5.2.35 and 8.5.2.55.
  • 8.9.x.x - Also known as GEOPAK XM. Runs on
    MicroStation XM.

4
File Format Changes
  • DC Manager (.ddb)
  • Quantity Manager (.mdb)
  • COGO (.gpk )
  • Bridge (.bdb)
  • Rebar (.rdb)

5
GPK File Format Change
  • The format will only be changed if the user
takes advantage of new functionalities in COGO.
Even then, the GPK will be able to be opened in
older versions, but any information that was
stored using the new capabilities of 8.8 may not
be readable in the older version.

6
New Configuration Variables
  • GPK_LEVEL_SET_BYLEVELS 1
  • Selecting a level from a graphical symbology
dialog will cause the color, weight and style to
    automatically default to ByLevel.

7
New Configuration Variables
  • GPK_LEVEL_XS_CELL Level Name
  • Controls the level name on which the XS Cell is
    placed.

8
New Configuration Variables
  • GPK_LEVEL_PROFILE_CELL Level Name
  • Controls the level name on which the Profile
    Cell is placed.

GPK_ACBOOK_ITEM_HELP_METHOD URL_TEMPLATE
The URL will be constructed from variables (item
name, description, adhoc name, type).
The "user_defined_template" is a URL or a local
path, that contains any of the following
variables item_name the name of
the selected item. item_description the
description of the selected item hash_sign
(this is needed because the sign is
used as a comment character in the config
file) file_name the ddb file
name adhoc_attribute_name the name of the
selected adhoc attribute.
GPK_ACBOOK_ITEM_HELP_URL_TEMPLATE
http//www.agency.com/adhoc-help/item_name.html
This means when help is requested for an item
(e.g. 12345), the name of the item will be
replaced in the template on the fly and the URL
will be opened as follows http//www.agency.com/
adhoc-help/12345.html
58

GPK_ACBOOK_ITEM_HELP_METHOD INDEX_FILE
The URL will be looked up from a csv-formatted
index page.
The CSV file should have the following heading
row ITEM_NAME, ITEM_DESCRIPTION,
ADHOC_ATTRIBUTE_NAME, URL Note The only required
values are the ITEM_NAME and the URL.
ITEM_NAME, ITEM_DESCRIPTION, ADHOC_ATTRIBUTE_NAME,

DC Manager - Quantities
  • When quantities are computed by standard units or
equation methods, the expression from which the
quantities are derived is preserved by Design and
Computation Manager and passed to Quantity
Manager. However when quantities are computed by
the criteria method or adhoc method, the
computation method or expression is not known.
In order to remedy this, the following
    enhancements have been added
  • (1) Criteria (3PC) method - a new command has
    been added
  • SET DC QUANTITY COMPUTATION METHOD string
  • Example SET DC QUANTITY COMPUTATION METHOD
    element_length 147.25 width 4.2
  • (2) Adhoc method When computing quantities
using the adhoc method, the item unit adhoc is
typically "LF" or "SQFT" or some short label
representing the unit. In the latest version, the
computation expression may be appended to the
unit, using a "" delimiter symbol.
  • Example LF element_length 147.25 width
    4.2 / 9.0
  • Note The entire string has a limitation of 46
    characters. The standard measurement variable
    names element_count, element_length and
element_area may also be expressed as e_c, e_l
    and e_a respectively.

61
DC Manager Adhoc Quantity Prorated
When adhocs are used to calculate the quantity of
an element, the adhoc typically represents the
entire quantity. But if the element is clipped
due to sheet, fence or boundary mode computing,
the expression/formula does not accurately
reflect the clipped portion of the quantity. To
this end, Design and Computation Manager has been
enhanced to account for this situation and will
automatically modify the expression by inserting
a clip multiplication factor. For example, if
75 of an element is used in the computation
method, the expression will be modified to
reflect this situation. element_length
147.25 clip factor 0.75 width 4.2 /
9.0
62
DC Manager DBMS Export
When exporting quantities using the DBMS format,
additional data options are available via the
Advanced Project Settings icon.
63
DC Manager DBMS Export
These additional settings are stored in the .mdb
file and can be transferred to Quantity Manager.
64
DC Manager - Supplement Desc.
In past versions of GEOPAK, if you had multiple
items with the same name, then the quantities for
the items were consolidated into a single
quantity when computed and exported to Quantity
Manager.
65
DC Manager - Supplement Desc.
The current version has been enhanced to allow
these items to retain their individual quantities
when computed and exported to Quantity Manager.
This is done through the use of an assigned
Description Prefix and Description Suffix.

Display GEOPAK attributes when mouse over an
element (same data as what is shown in the
Element Attribute dialog). This behavior is
enabled by default if AccuSnaps Identify
Elements Automatically is turned on.
  • If MicroStation element attribute display is
desired and GEOPAK attribute is NOT, you can
disable the GEOPAK attribute display by setting
    the configuration variable as shown
