  • Engineers use Chemistry.
  • Mathematicians solve problems.
  • Physicists and Chemists discover how things work.

Outsmarting Little Kids
Math and science without a context or reason
can cause some interesting reactions. None of
which lead to careers in engineering. Get them
interested and sneak the boring stuff in.
Why do I need this stuff?

Capabilities
http//members.tripod.com/simplemotor/ A 9th
graders efforts This home page features an
award-winning, easy-to-build, and inexpensive
electric motor. In technical terms it is
called a reed switch based brushless DC motor.
However, it is extremely simple, and at the same
time very stable, reliable, and efficient. I
designed and built this motor for my school
science fair project. In 1998-1999 this project
won the following awards ? Grand prize at
Dallas Regional Science Fair in '99. ? 1st place
in '99 and 2nd place in '98 in Engineering at
Dallas Regional Science Fair. ? 1st place and a
special award from North Texas Electrical League
in '98 and '99. ? 1st place and an award from
Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers
in '98. ? 1st place at the Plano District
Science Fair in '99. ? Honorable mention at
Texas State Science Fair in '98. This project
was displayed at a special exhibition of prize
winning science fair projects at The Science
Place Museum in Dallas.

Preparation Efforts
1. Offered our Digital Logic I course at a
local high school. 1998 2. Helped to design a
9th grade Junior Engineering course. 1999 3.
Partnered with Bellflower Middle/High School for
a 5 year Gearup grant to develop Junior
Engineering/MESA after-school programs for
7th through 11th grade. 1999 4. Seeking
funding to develop an Engineering Physics course
for high school students.

Recruitment Efforts
The CSULB Presidents Scholars Program provides
full scholarships for valedictorians,
National Merit Finalists or Semi-Finalists. CSULB
is being marketed as the University of
Choice. University President has improved
graduation rates for athletes while putting
CSULB teams into the forefront. GO BEACH!
