WHAT IS A CURRICULUM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM?

designed to incorporate curriculum data into a
    single, easy-to-use master database.
  • It includes
  • course listings
  • curriculum sheets
  • schedule of classes
  • green sheets (faculty syllabi)

3
WHAT DOES THE SYSTEM ALLOW YOU TO DO?
  • The system is comprised of modules
  • These modules allow the user to design, develop,
    edit and publish information for
  • course outlines
  • program curriculum
  • green sheets (faculty syllabi)

4
WHAT DOES THE SYSTEM ALLOW YOU TO DO?
  • Houses and provides access to edit schedules and
    catalog in the areas of
  • division and department information
  • footnote and header listings
  • Can be used to proof listings that will appear in
our online and printed catalog and schedules
  • Houses all course outlines of record

5
WHAT DOES THE SYSTEM ALLOW YOU TO DO?

  • Multi-user environment allows for collaboration
  • Allows access to course outline and curriculum
information to multiple users across campus

WHAT DOES THE SYSTEM ALLOW YOU TO DO?
  • This is the system for
  • adding new courses
  • changing existing courses
  • deleting outdated material
  • Provides timely information through daily updates

8
WHY DID FOOTHILL NEED TO DESIGN SUCH A SYSTEM?
  • Current SIS software unable to support this data
  • field limitations
  • no interest in building something onto SIS since
it is due to be replaced
  • Incompatibility with a Filemaker Pro upgrade
    prompted a mandatory change
  • Data are transferable to future systems when/as
    needed

9
WHAT DID WE HAVE?
  • Data data everywhere, but where is the
    information I need?
  • some data only accessible by one person
  • some data in print version only
  • hand written!
  • only available if you knew the right person and
they remembered where they placed it

10
CLASS SCHEDULE
  • Data primarily Filemaker Pro based
  • located in two different physical locations
  • comprised of five different databases
  • use different technologies and access methods
  • New system MySQL based
  • Allows porting of information directly into
    Adobe InDesign

11
SYSTEM GOALS
  • Goals for the C3 system included easy access for
  • administrators
  • faculty
  • staff
  • students
  • general public

12
SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY
  • Designed in html, php, utilizing a MySQL
    back-end database
  • Program is designed to be flexible for the end
user while allowing for expansion and easy
    administration

13
WHY MYSQL?
  • Free, open source, relational database software
  • Supported by a community of users
  • The best performing relational database we could
find without spending thousands of dollars on a
    proprietary SQL
  • Any programmer can understand this language

14
WHO DID THE WORK?
  • The C3 system was designed by Senior
    WebCoordinator Lee Collings, along with
    Curriculum Coordinator Corinne Nuñez.
  • Nuñez consulted on the needs of the Instruction
Office with Vice President of Instruction and
    Institutional Research Bill Patterson.
  • Kurt Hueg provided overall supervision and
    troubleshooting.

15
A REVIEW OF THE PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF THE C3
SYSTEM
  • Administrative functions
  • User functions
  • course outlines
  • curriculum sheets
  • schedule of classes
  • green sheets (faculty syllabi)
  • Student learning outcomes
