3Lets learn about line symmetry!
Please explore the links below in the order they
are listed. Click on the first one to get
started!
1. What is line symmetry? 2. Where can we find
objects with line symmetry? 3. Can we find
symmetry in the animal kingdom? 4. Are there
ways to check for line symmetry? 5. Test Your

This is the HOME slide.
4What is line symmetry?
Line Symmetry We say that something has line
symmetry if it can be folded on a line so that
its two parts are exactly the same.
Example

5In other words, a shape has line symmetry when
one halfof it is the mirror image of the other
half.

7Lines of symmetry must be straight lines. These
straight lines can be drawn in many directions,
as long as the parts on each side of the line are
exactly the same.

9Symmetry Around Us
Line symmetry exists all around us. Many
everyday objects have line symmetry. Many
people see it as being a thing of beauty. Can
you identify these every day objects with line
symmetry ?

11Symmetry In the Animal Kingdom
In the animal kingdom, line symmetry not only
produces beauty, but it also helps animals
function efficiently.

Would this butterfly look as beautiful and fly
as gracefully if both of its wings were different?

14Did You Mention Humans?
Human beings are also animals. Did you know we
also have a line of symmetry that runs down the
middle of our bodies? Look at a classmates
face. Can you see an imaginary line of symmetry?
Notice how both sides of this womans face are
the same.

15How to Find Line Symmetry
Sometimes its easy to look at an object and
decide if it has line symmetry. Other times,
it can be much more difficult to tell.

16How to Find Line Symmetry
To help us decide if an object has line
symmetry, we can use the trace and fold method.

26Sorry, try again.
This object CANNOT be folded on a line so that
its two parts are exactly the same. The toe would
be sticking out on one side and not on the other.

27Not quite.

its two parts are exactly the same. Can you see
the difference?

29Good try.
This object CANNOT be folded on a line so that
its two parts are exactly the same. A flower
sticks out on one side of the clowns hat and not
on the other. His mouth is also shaped
differently on each side.
